Should Gun Safety Be Taught In Highschools?

We are a nation of guns. Too many accidental shootings occur every day. Ignorance is a prime killer. Gun safety could be taught to high school seniors and taught without ammunition. To understand all the in and outs of weapons for home protection does not need bullets. How many times have we heard "I didn't know it was loaded"? Look at this subject this way, is ignorance better than knowledge when it comes to gun ownership? I believe this can save many lives every year. Driving safety classes are for the reason of prevention of accidents the same as a gun class would be. Thoughts?

When I was in school it was offered on school grounds, after school hours, for convenience and taught by a state certified instructor for anyone that was interested. It was a requirement if you wanted to apply for a state hunting license. Today I'm not sure if it is still offered at a school or if it is held at a local rod and gun club. We also had a similar course in boat and water safety that was taught by a certified instructor. Those classes made sense in our rural location but I'm not sure how much sense they make in an urban or suburban environment.

I think that it could be offered as part of a general life skills course that deals with things we all may encounter in our everyday lives or as part of a school safety program but not as a mandatory stand-alone course.

IMO we should consider any option that helps to educate and inform people about safety in an unbiased way. My concern is that the lessons could be heavily skewed depending on a person's view of gun ownership.

Many , many reasons why it will never happen. Schools are way too busy trying to pound round pegs in to square holes. Emphasis is to push everyone into university or STEM regardless of whether they belong or not.

Every minute of of instruction time is being spent on subjects and concepts most students will never use. Vocational Arts no longer exists in traditional high School. No Driver Ed, no Home Ec, hell most schools don't even offer a civics course any more.
In our school district our kid needs to take basic business math to learn to balnce a check book.

Marksmanship instruction should be a part of the regular Phys. Ed. curriculum just as Archery used to be.
Never will happen. For those that are astute enough to want some knowledge of what they are so scared of, classes are offered every day at Gun Stores Sportsmans club and Gun Ranges nationwide. You just need the desire to do
