Should we be apologizing rather than giving thanks?

After all, what we did to the people we found here warrants more than giving them casinos. Just Something to think about as you enjoy your turkey and football...

Totally agree. There's a good book about the Pilgrims and what really happened.

I suppose the apologies are mostly symbolic but as a Canadian where we followed the same type of thinking (the Indians are savages and don't count) but used different methods of abuse, I think what we need to do is properly follow the treaties we signed with the forefathers and treat them equally now. First Nations kids here who are being educated on reserve receive about 2/3 the funding that our 'white' schools do not to mention that many of their schools are unsafe and unhealthy. Our current government has also chosen to ignore Constitutional requirements to consult with the bands whenever it comes to resource extraction from land that was signed over to them in perpetuity and even changed environmental laws that protected the waterways of Northern Canada despite the fact that many bands rely on the health of those waterways for their drinking water and fishing.

Native Americans were certainly short shifted by European immigrants. Apologies now are hollow... BUT we certainly should honor the treaties made and allow them their lands...

I've often had these thoughts in the back of my mind regarding Thanksgiving. Most people don't think about it though.

I'll be going off to work soon anyway.

Some of the ways we did treat the native in what is now the US have been ended. We have now allowed them to have their own governments and to talk their own languages. The schools are just as good as the others and in many areas they are brought into the nearby towns to join in the area schools. The Navajo's have even built a university on their lands. The larger nations, like the Navajo, have hospitals, schools, police forces, and make their own laws that must be followed as well as the state laws. They also have towns with stores and medical help and hotels for the tourist in the area. The Navajo are in several states including Arizona, New Mexico, Utah. Within the Navajo nation is a large area for the Hopi natives. I have been in several areas where the natives are allowed to have their own ways, but the native also get provided money and services they are not able to put together themselves. Some groups are just too small to be able to do it all on their own.

The Navajo were doing quite well when providing coal to the power plants and not sure about the power plants themselves, but now with our government making so many arbitrary justifications about using our coal, some clean coal and processes do no harm to the earth or the people, but they have been shut down anyway. So that may be cause for many Navajo to not have work these days. I have lived near the Seminoles but wonder how they manage living in swamps. Have also live near some Ute areas and they seem to be pretty active in creating work for their people. One group has a lot of construction activity read to work on buildings or highways. They also have a truck stop, a hotel, a casino, a restaurant. We have had some native Americans get elected into our nations government as Senators and Representatives. For the most part the natives I have met are honest, workers, and capable.

For the most part, the natives will take care of themselves. And do it well.
