Signs of things to come ?

They are not really saying why but Ill bet it has to do with the new and improved Obamacare.,

This week, Target announced that it would cut approximately 475 jobs.
Just last week, J. C. Penney announced job cuts of its own, saying it would close 33 stores and cut about 2,000 jobs.
Walmart Will Lay Off 2300 Sam's Club Workers.
Macy’s,said the company would lay off 2,500 employees

I dont know about anybody being captured as hackers of 40 million Target credit card customers.
I did notice they caught 2 people at the Mexican border with a bunch of Target credit cards, thats a totally different story.

I do know that J C Penny has been in trouble for the last few year, people just aren't shopping there.

And that's all I know about that.

I guess you can hear anything. I heard the Target thing was traced to a seventeen year old in Russia. He was selling info on Target customers. but then who knows? Also heard this volcano eruption in Hawaii was caused by Obamacare.

I know Sears has been going downhill fast for years now, supposed to close down some more stores...also Best Buy.

Well Sears has lasted longer than I thought it would after the K-Mart buy out. They rape and pillage every company they buy, including one I worked for for 14 years. There is a special mall in hell waiting for K-Mart to crash and burn and open up down there.

What is your opinions of the main reason so many of these once profitable companies are struggling? Is it the unemployment, general economy, fear of the unAffordable Care Act, internet shopping, less young people leaving home and not purchasing the bigger ticket items such as appliances and furniture, aging population that have all the stuff they need, too much retail competition to support all the stores? I guess probably a combination of all.

Probably a combination of things. Mostly, I figure it's outsourcing globalization for cheap labor and greedy corp(se) clowns keeping more and more for themselves.

Ozgal and TG you are both right.

Just from talking to other people at work, there is a very common thread of not spending money on things you don't need, not going out to restaurants much or at all.
All the basic things in our lives we need, our utilities and food gasoline, the prices keep going up and up, you have to conserve someplace. And there aren't enough decent jobs around that people can actually make a living wage.

It's a very said state of affairs for us all. And don't get me started on the cost of individual health insurance, I have been doing some checking and it is grim at best.

Sure you can find a policy that you can make the payments on, but check out the deductibles and out of pocket caps. E-gads. I did a lot of number crunching and you are better off in the long run if you pay more, because then if you have to use it, it pays better. It's a crap shoot! Atleast I have lots of time to wade through the quagmire of our health care options. (or lack thereof)

Over here; there is a widening gap between the 'haves' and the 'have-nots'.

The 'haves' are carrying on much as before....drinking, eating, buying clothes from Next, ( not M and S) and buying food from the more upmarket supermarkets, like Waitrose, and M and S.

The 'have-nots' are increasingly shopping at low price supermarkets, like Aldi; increasingly using food banks, and, even if they are working, finding it increasingly difficult to make ends meet.

And we don't need health insurance!

Not only the volcano eruption in Hawaii, drifter, but I know for a fact that Pres O caused the avocado freeze and is personally responsible for the colder weather everywhere!

OH..I feel your healthcare pain. Been on that treadmill since retiring. Mr.O retired with Medicare in place, but getting insurance for me has been very expensive. Looking forward to October when I'll be eligible for Medicare, too.

I agree going for a higher end policy makes sense if you have medical problems. Glad I did since unexpected expensive problems came up. Even at that it's a struggle to meet co-pays and deductibles every year. Between the high premiums and out of pocket costs it has eaten up a bunch of our discretionary money.

Some of these major chain stores are not keeping up with those on sale such as Amazon and E Bay. They think everybody wants to keep going to the stores and maybe get shot at like we've been hearing the last couple of weeks.

Exactly!

.....and not one word about Obamacare in either.

..and why would there be? These are both very liberal publications.

Having said that this is my last word on anything Obama as it is a very inflammatory subject, one I don't want to engage further in, so sitting on my hands on that subject. Happy to discuss it PM.

Viv, that is the same situation here. Whenever I go back to Dallas/Fort Worth, all the restaurants and malls are packed, and there are a jillion of them. A lot of people may just be mall browsing, but they are in the restaurants to eat. There is so much retail and restaurant competition there I don't know how any of them make a profit.

It's just one of those stores that has never drawn me in, tho over the years they've worked hard to change/improve their image. Still, I have to pass by 3 great shopping centers/malls that I like much more and rarely, if ever, make it across town to Pennys. Same for Sears, I just don't shop those 2 stores.

People are always talking about curb appeal in homes, well Penny's doesn't have any curb appeal for me and at the same time I'm probably missing out on some great bargains.

Can I throw my little 2 cents in here and say how proud I am that, yes, it is an inflammatory subject, but the offer has been made to discuss it PM. I think that's progress and good luck to the both of you. Our board is war weary right now, is it not? I'm hoping for the best as we don't all view politics the same, but no need to bring the board in on it. Kudos to them for their efforts! Neither one may change their mind, but at least they will be able to state their case and that's a good start! Mutually co-existing has a good ring to it, I think!

I would like to add another thought....for every political slam (Republican or Democrat) that is made, generally a few cringe. This is a very friendly forum and politics is an extremely rough subject. Wasn't there a debating forum recently created for just that?

Whoever came up with the idea that you don't discuss politics or religion in public had the right idea, IMO and JMO.

Did some more checking around and I can get a bit cheaper plan and and the deductible is about equal to the extra I would be paying for the more expensive plan. It should work out ok for me.

But it won't be until next year so the rates will change by then anyway. But I need to know what's out there. I'll have so damn much on my mind when I leave here, I am not going to tax the little grey cells anymore than I have to at one time. I'll just keep my uber expensive work plan and ditch it after a few months to something more affordable. (yeah I'd like to stay out of that coffee can we have our extra money buried in too)

Atleast the mister is all taken care of, he has his medicare and supplemental insurance already. Lucky Bastard!

Does anyone know if the Obama thingie got rid of charity hospitals? I might have find one soon. Did you know you can get antibiotics at the local animal feed store? Hmmm
