SitComs

SitComs have a reputation as being mindless, but I miss them. It was pleasant knowing I could sit down for a half hour every week and have a few laughs. There don’t seem to be many anymore.

There were some good ones. Many the whole family could enjoy. Just off the top of my head - Third Rock from the Sun, Cheers, Alf, Bob Newhart, Big Bang, et al. There were lots of bad ones too. Some got good reviews and then some executive decided they needed to go.

The TV networks seem to have decided they’re not fashionable anymore. Maybe that’s why the networks are in trouble.

I'm not sure they decided that it's not fashionable. I think it has to do with people no longer possessing a sense of humor. I think they're up against offending the masses with whatever they joke about. Although s3x and violence seem to be perfectly permissible. Not to mention the swearing on tv now. But God forbid someone should get made fun of on TV. I mostly watch reruns Jules.

hey @Jules, ya know you have a point there... There are not a lot of 20-minute comedies around anymore... Using the Firestick, I never really noticed that. But also a lot has changed in the world in the last two years. If YOU really think about it, there's really not a lot of anything on TV anymore...Thinking because people now are watching a lot more Prime or Netflix... Those two networks have really changed how we watch television now... But I agree, there is not a lot of comedy around anymore...

I like Ghosts, The Neighborhood, the Conners. Sometimes I like that Sheldon show and I do think there's an appropriate amount of comedies on regular TV. Admittedly, these shows are not Seinfeld quality, but that was a stand alone gem.

The last sitcom I remember enjoying on regular network TV was Arrested Development back in the early 2000's. It was cancelled after only three seasons mainly because the humor wasn't for everyone. It was revived on Netflix a few years later but it wasn't as funny. I tried to like Modern Family but it kind of became stale for me after a couple of seasons. Loved Veep but I wouldn't consider it a classic sitcom. These days I prefer to watch the darker dramas on Netflix, Hulu, and Prime. It is not that I have lost my sense of humor. I just prefer to watch dramas over comedies, and that goes for movies also.

The only "older" sitcoms that I can still watch without cringing much are Frasier and Seinfeld.. I loved sitcoms such as Cheers, Mash, All in the Family The Mary Tyler Moore Show , etc at that time and they will always have a special place in my mind but I have a hard time watching them now.

I still watch reruns of The Big Bang Theory, Seinfeld, and that's all. I used to watch reruns of Everybody Loves Raymond, but not any more. On Saturday nights on PBS, I still watch reruns of 2 British comedies that I have on DVD, As Time Goes By and Keeping Up Appearances.
