Sleep patterns…?

Anyone else have their daily biological clock totally out of rhythm with the world? I have been over the years waking earlier and earlier! Now I get up at 2 AM! I kind of like it- everything is so quiet and peaceful. It gives me time to get things done before the day starts. Of course it means going to bed Extremely early to get adequate sleep! My kids (when they are home) make fun of me :)
I do live alone, which makes it easier to have such a weird sleep schedule, and I do have to be at work early!
Is this bad from a health point of view? psychologically? probably not good socially…
Any one else do this??? Thanks…. just wondering

Since retirerment, I have enjoyed getting up before sunrise and riding my bike or walking. Sleep comes in bits and pieces for me as I am up, bathroom call, a couple times a night. As long as you are getting a fair amount of sleep, it should be fine. After you retire, afternoon naps are your friend.:)

2am sounds a bit too early, but it depends on how early you start work. i used to get up at 4am, had breakfast, then rode a bicycle for couple of hours to work.

When I was working I got up at 4 or 5 o'clock and didn't get to sleep until late, so I didn't get enough sleep on most days. I did make up for it on weekends though. If you're going to bed early enough it's probably okay, but it would have to be around 8PM.

There's always advice out there about how too little sleep can kill you, or too much sleep can kill you, lol. Advice, like on a lot of things, always changing. I think getting at least 6 hours is a healthy way to go about it, regardless of when those 6 hours take place. Now that I'm retired, I'm in bed by 11pm, usually asleep by midnight, and up around 8 or 9am. Sleeping more than I ever did while working. :eek:fftobed:

I prefer early morning rising but working until midnight and not getting to sleep until 0200 has ruined that. One thing I quickly noticed as lily has pointed out . . . it's really quiet and peaceful. My long drive home through the coastal mountains may be spooky but it's a breeze with nobody on the road. I'm thinking of becoming a vampire! Need Phil's advice on that possibility . . .

I started taking melatonin supplements over 10 years ago when I read the book titled "Melatonin Miracle", and it told how much it can help as an anti-aging supplement, and keep the other hormones working correctly. It is also the hormone that helps people and animals sleep at the proper time.
Cattle produce it in their milk in the evening, as well as babies produce it. It begins to activate as the sun goes down, and it starts to get dark, thus making us sleepy when darkness arrives.
The older we get, the less melatonin our bodies make, as our other hormones also gradually decrease. Plus, we now use artificial light at night, so the melatonin we do make does not start working like it is supposed to do.

I started taking 3 mg of melatonin, and over the years gradually increased my dose, as I got older and produced less and less of it naturally. I now take 6-10 mg at nite about a half hour before I am ready to go to bed, and usually have no problem sleeping all nite, unless I have had extra caffeine, or something else that keeps a person awake.

I've had my sleep cycle turned upside down. When working I got up when I had to, generally around five-thirty to six. I've never been a morning person. I come on in the afternoon and good till midnight. The last three years, I've been getting up at three or four and going to bed around eleven. A few times I've gotten up two. Recently I've had an ongoing lung infection, running a low grade temperature and getting up at five, going back to bed at six-thirty ad sleeping till eight-thirty. For a while I went to bed at eleven and up at two. Crazy.

I haven't used an alarm in years. I tend to wake up at around 7 every day. I make sure lights are out before midnight, usually around 11 because my body needs 8 hours of sleep. I rarely nap. There have been times I've gone through phases of insomnia and it is exhausting. Early morning sun on the eyes is good for you and sets your circadian rhythm. I know it's bad to watch TV in the bedroom, but I'm guilty.
