Smart, defensive, or rude?

Well, it's time for another "AC's Convenience Store Adventures" story.

Friend had to take care of some business in an office building, I told her I'd run next door to corner store.

As I approached the store parking lot I heard "How far ya goin? " (...huh?) I looked and saw that some guy was yelling at me from inside his car as he drove out of the lot.

I said: "Why?" He said "It's cold out here. I could give you a ride."

I didn't reply but made a "move on" motion with my hand and went inside the store. When I came out I looked around to make sure the guy wasn't still in the parking lot.

I didn't want to be bothered.
I didn't need a ride.
If I needed a ride I'd get an Uber.

Later friend said "aaawww, he was probably just being friendly, but better safe than sorry."

(This kind of thing has happened to me before. Here's one example)

I would have done the same thing AC, and probably with the look on my face, he wouldn't want to wait around for me or take it any further. I've been hit on a lot in my day, still get some hopefuls now and then, thankfully not too often anymore. I'm not shy about letting them know where to get off. I'd say your move was smart and defensive.

SMART!!! Instinct coupled with the reality of how society is now made it possible for you to share your experience and post here. Trusting your gut beats considering if your action was rude or defensive. Actually nothing wrong with defensive since that is what experience does to give you the gut instinct.

I never engage in a conversation, when this type of thing happens to me, I either walk away or just give a blank look and shrug, implying I don’t speak the same language or can’t speak at all, confusing them and avoiding any possible antagonism

I never had that happen to me in a creepy way but when I was a teenager I used to go for long walks and local folks would always stop to offer me a ride. Of course, that was back in the days before exercise and exercise outfits had been invented.

I guess the pick-up lines haven't changed much since the 70s.

SMART!!

It's a sad commentary on the way the world is that we have to be mistrustful of what would have been considered common courtesy years ago. But it's 2020 and here we are and we have to keep our guard up.

So yes, I vote SMART!!

Just based on what I've seen in the city I live in I would hazard a guess that 1/3rd of them are Bat S**t Crazy & I try to stay away from them.
