So how is the winter going for you?

When I first moved to N. E. PA in 1992, the winter was horrible. It snowed and snowed and snowed. There were huge 6 foot snow drifts. Well, zoom to 2023. It snowed once for about 5 inches. And there isn't supposed to be a snow flake till early Feb. So how is the winter going for you? And south of the Equator, how's your summer going for you? And for Californians, we'll pray for you.

We had a short three week winter blast here in my local areas last week December first week January,
then came the ice storm, next in line was the actual snow which only was three days totaling 8 inches,
so all in all, temps are still cool, but acceptable, I long for Spring to arrive~I'm in Washington State, USA..

It's been seesawing in terms of temps and we've had many more cloudy days than usual. Instead of getting a big storm this Jan as we usually do by 2nd or 3rd week...we've had lots of smaller snows without enough 'full sun' days between to melt them off so they have accumulated and while roads are kept clear and i've cleared my driveway to enter the road, it has been over a week since i've been able to park near my house. It's a long hike so i'm getting exercise for sure.

This photo of my covered pile after a bit of morning sun melted some of snow off the tires that keep the wind from stealing the tarp kind of expresses how i've been feeling:

We;ve had a lot of snow this winter.. and the below zero temps have kept the ice on the ground for long periods..

Today it's raining so at last ice and snow are all washed away and temps are higher at 3 deg today.. but they forecast more ice and snow..

i kind of like the handful of single digit and occasional below zero (F) temps we get here most winters. Why? Because it reduces the number of nuisance insect we get the following summer. Flies, mosquitoes, fleas (tho rarely get many of them anyway)

Miss the playing-in part of winter: ice skating; sledding; cross-country skiing and taking lovers walks during a fresh snowfall. Amazing! Spring arrives and hot maple syrup on ice, instant toffee... Yummy!

However, I don't miss the shovelling, the stupid snowplough blocking our driveways just as we've finished shovelling everything or that ... neighbour who would empty his driveway onto our car and freshly freed driveway. Argh!!!!!

Today, in my now forever Scottish Hometown, it's super mild, around 8°C. So warm indoors that we've reduced the heating thermostat down to 17°C.

It's one of the good things about this part of the UK.. we generally don't get many insects.. Flies in summer.. Bees, wasps yes.. but not to any great extent .. but very rarely mosquitoes, no fleas..

Where did you move from? :giggle:

Even with all the damage, I was thrilled with the rain and I'm depressed again that it's not raining. All was fine in my area. Just some flooding out of town in low lying areas that are prone to flooding anyway.

It's been sunny.

Very bad. We started winter in November, a month early with very cold and snow. Record snow and cold, especially around Christmas. Snowploughs couldn’t keep up, roads were bad. Now it hovers around freezing, but wild weather is predicted.

There’ve been at least 5 deaths from avalanches. The conditions are really bad - beautiful, heavy, unstable snow.

We've been fortunate so far this winter, as far as having little snow. However, it is snowing right now, and
is forecast to snow tomorrow, and then again in a few days.

I wonder what February and March will bring.

Well, this weekend temps are going south to mid 20's. We have had an brush of ice (I've seen 4" in 2004 what a mess) and a bit of snow. But the PNW usually doesn't get snow till January/February.

So, we're going to hunker down. I just filled gas and propane. This weekend we'll take in the brass monkeys.

Best mid winter snow conditions in years. Tall highway side above vehicle height snow banks. Tahoe skiing midweek so far into double digit days, though not quite as much as expected due to too many stormy days shutting down roads and resorts and recently a right sciatica nerve flare up. Was supposed to drive up yesterday to ski next 3 days but will wait until next Monday after the 49ers Eagles game to heal with more certainty.

Winter has been okay but I am looking forward to the Spring, longer daylight hours, daffodils and the promise of sunshine to come. ☀️

Reno usually doesn’t get what I consider real winters but this is the 5th one in 26 years. We have had snow on the ground for a month which is very unusual. It’s also colder than normal and I don’t like it. My winter coat is usually a sweater. The mountains are getting slammed which is good for our water supply since we have been in a drought.
