Social Media not so Social

I am amazed that so many people do not bother to put info about themselves on their FB profiles. If someone contacts me about items I am selling on FB, I like to see how far they coming or so I can give them better directions, but most of the time all their personal info is blank. Why bother, then, to use social media?

I am a member of FB only because a few of my friends and some businesses we deal with, are active users. Even then, I rarely check it. Given the incredible carelessness with which the company handles personal information, I'm not inclined to give them more than the time of day.

I can understand your dissatisfaction, but there are very good reasons why I seldom fill out the profiles on ANY company websites, not just FB.

Same here ....

There are many reasons people do not give personal information on their social media profiles, it makes no difference to other members and does not affect their contribution to the site

Some posts make no sense and aren't worth reading if you have no idea where a person is located. As in "It's a sunny day, temp in the 70's and rain is expected". Or "The price of gas is $2.72" ??

Normally with post like this (if I happen to be interested) the first thing I do is look to the upper right to see where they're talking about. That "sunny day with rain expected" could be in South America, or Australia for that matter. Not much value with only that info.

When it comes to FB I think it is a good idea to keep your personal information to a minimum and review your security settings periodically to make sure that nothing has changed.

I wouldn't feel comfortable selling things on FB if I had to provide potential customers with my telephone number, address, etc...

I would throw the stuff away before I let a stranger into my home and risked some sort of assault, theft, etc...

I could not agree more. I put my city and state on here because it is pretty general -- I mean it's a fairly large metropolitan area -- but would I EVER put my address, phone, etc. on any social media? Not on your life! With that much info people can go onto "people search" sites and find out just about anything they want to about you -- your age, your relatives, who you live with, other names you've used, your friends, court histories (criminal and civil), where you work/used to work, organizations you are a member of, and just about anything you can think of. Might as well put a "crazies welcome here" sign on your front door.

Some people have the info there but it's only visalble to their friends. I have a cover photo that could pretty well give someone an idea of where I live. Snow capped mountins a few miles away with orange trees close to the camera. But for my city I have listened a large city about 50 miles from my house. But we can be pretty social without revealing all our business. I have a lot of good friends on the internet that I have yet to meet in person.
