Soda Machine?

Does anyone here use a soda machine? I think Soda Stream is the best known, but there are quite a few brands and models.

I'm drinking a lot more soda now that I'm retired. I never pour even a half glass, but I keep having 'some' all thru the day.

I'm thinking of making my own, for;
reducing my cost (after the initial cost of the machine and supplies)
controlling the type and amount of sweetener
controlling the caffeine
eliminating carrying it home with my groceries

I've read that there are quite a few companies making soda syrup, in a very wide variety of flavors, which appeals to me. And there are recipes online for making your own syrup (but I suspect there will be some ingredients that a grocery store doesn't carry).

I've read that you can reduce costs by using a paintball CO2 tank and an adapter - but I've also read that paintballing has practically abandoned CO2 in favor of high pressure air. So I hesitate to 'invest' in that.

I don't have any experience with them but I would think that the cost of supplies would be about the same as buying soda on sale in the local grocery.

I would try to cut my soda consumption by drinking other beverages or plain old water. If that isn't possible I would look into having the store deliver or using an Uber when the grocery store is having a good sale on your favorite brand of soda.

If all else fails try good old KoolAid!

Good luck!

I buy 2 liter plain seltzer from Safeway for 69 cents to a dollar a bottle. Plain carbonated seltzer water, zero calories, zero sugars, zero sodium, zero caffeine. If I want to add flavor, I put in a touch of natural unsweetened cherry juice, grape juice, etc. I do have to lug them home from the store when I buy them, but I'll buy a lot at a time....once and done. I don't want to bother with a machine.

I have thought about getting one of those too. Problem is, I've never tasted any of the flavors. I don't know anyone who has one and I'd like to sample. I prefer my water carbonated, so if I could make my own, I'd be a happy camper.

I have a Sodastream and I just LOVE it ! I mostly drink just the plain carbonated water, but sometimes I add lemon or some flavoring to the water after I “fizzilate” it.
My daughter gifted me with a Sodastream Penguin about 8 years ago, and I have used that up until this year. It uses the glass carafes and it is more difficult to use than the cheap ones; so when Amazon had them on sale for almost half price last summer on Prime Day, I got one of the new cheap ones.
It is super easy to use, and the kit that I got came with the device, two carbonator containers, three 1-liter plastic bottles, and 2 little bottles of flavoring, so everything I needed to get started using it.
I am sure that it will be on sale again, with the holiday season coming up.

Soda stream is owned by Pepsi now. Was an Israeli invention. I made a nice profit from the stock. Tried it at a store but won't buy it
