Some Forums an Sites are Really Mean

I’ve been on lots of forums or social sites and there‘re always disagreements. That’s not bad if people are civil about it.

The very worst I’ve found over the years are home decorating or design sites for small homes, etc. Some people are really vicious.

They say things like:
‘your home is so ugly, I don’t know how you live in it’,
’rip out cabinets, countertops and floor’. The person might just have asked for a suggestion for a wall paint colour.
etc, etc, etc.

Even making a comment that it would be nice if people were nice to each other gets an attack. ‘How dare you; we’re allowed to say what we want’

Have you joined sites that it was too hostile to participate or remain. I must admit, I still return to the decorating sites; not a bats’ chance that I’ll ever post anything anymore. Thank goodness for the interesting and nice posts.

Yep...yep...and yep.... and I've been a Moderator on 2 different forums..

2 guys were particularly vile, absolutely horrible people. They were threatening others, so I banned them after asking many times for them to stop.. and they both signed up again with proxy Ip addresses, ( these were men over 50) and spammed every thread on the forum.. calling me every dirty name even a sailor couldn't think of.. they were banned by the forum owner and they came back again and again and again, and till the forum owner ( male) threatened to bring the police in..... repulsive scum...

One of those the worst of the 2 registered here as well..some years ago.. people didn't like him and we haven't seen him post here for a long time thank God.. I hope he's dead, he was so vile..

Overall tho' I've found the majority of Vile people on forums are women...

Some computer forums can have snarky people that might have ample technical knowledge but have zero emotional maturity and people skills.
I like to code, write my own apps and websites, but just for fun. I've never had any formal training. One forum I ask questions on when I get stuck is like that. Lots of people (kids I think) with a good bit of knowledge and no people skills. I think with technology people it may just be par for course.

I stumbled onto an IT workers' forum and they said that in spite of a lot of the jokes you see, they didn't find old people without tech knowledge to be the most irritating of customers at all; instead they all seemed to agree that the most irritating customers of all were males between 13 and 40 years of age; they said males in that age group all seem to think they're cyber ninjas and would hire these techs and then try to tell them how to do their job.

Don't let me start on the Artist websites. People post art that they have done and have not asked for a critique, and others just rip the art piece apart. And then, if the art represents political figures or religious figures or icons, the wars begin again. I have left many art groups on FB. I think I found one that is pretty good and the moderators try to watch out for nasty people.

All I can say is, if you can't take the heat, stay out of the kitchen. They aren't going to change for you.
No, they aren’t going to change, but we should not tolerate these trolls. They are a very vocal minority. Just because there is free speech, that is just an excuse to be an *sshole. Should everyone online whimper and quit because of a minority of nasty participants.

we're the stronger ones, they're the weak ones who resort to abusive language when they don't get their own way... you;ll notice that here as well..

I know what you mean about FB. I left that behind about 8-10 years ago. So many angry little people. 🤬

I used to be a member of forums that did allow politics. Mostly we Democrats and the Republicans got along although we disagreed on many issues. We were respectful of each other. That all changed when a certain person entered politics, and suddenly mean angry people started appearing on the forums. I got so sick and tired of the disrespect for our country and our constitution, that I had to leave. After that, I started to look for a forum that had no politics. No politics. No arguements.

there will always be arguments despite the Politics Ban.. regardless... there are always mean little nasty people sitting behind a screen spouting Bile that they wouldn't dare say to someone's face... which is why forums like this have the ignore button...

I see some really despicable behavior on forums. Good moderators can control most of it. Political discussions are the worst; far too many people can't seem to accept the fact that you may not think like they do. The name-calling and derogatory remarks start almost immediately. Typically, I'll just remind them that they are eradicating their credibility with ad hominem attacks and then stop any further communication with them. No need to get upset.

Wow. Decorating sites? I'll bet they've watched too many of those HGTV shows and now they think they're house flippers and all they need is a sledge hammer and a big dose of arrogance -- like the stars of those shows! LOL I see this on YouTube when people show tours of their homes. If the commenters see something like wall-to-wall carpeting (like I have) they'll talk about how "nasty" it is. They must think we all have endless amounts of money so that we can re-do everything every other year when styles change.

Just go on the My Fitness Pal site, like I did once, and dare to tell them that you've been following the same diet for months and where you were once losing you're now either staying the same or gaining. They will not hesitate to tell you you're lying and must be failing to log everything you eat. Most of them are young and the weight just falls off like it once did for me.

I love message boards and have belonged to all sorts, Christian sites, TV Shows, Classic Movies, Political sites, on and on. Guess where I was often dog piled and told to f-off and die? That's right, the Christian sites. A lot depends on the moderator and what he/she will tolerate.

I disagree about My fitness pal.

Ive been a member there for over 10 years - Like everywhere there are a few snarky posters but most are not - and there are many older posters they are by no means all young.

I moderate five groups in another place where the members can start groups.
Since I started all of them only forum friends have joined them.
And every new post in them in them is started by me.
i haven’t had any trouble with me yet ;).
One of them is a group for Classic ( and not so Classic ) albums.
A bit like my thread on the subject here!
But I’ve seen one or two arguments on various forums.
I had someone take a real dislike to me on a long closed forum.
They caused me all sorts of problems!
The site owners had to get involved.
Never seen any issues on this friendly place.

Yes, I have come across people like that on forums and all other social media sites also. Especially on YouTube. That is just the way some people are. There are people like that living in my apartment building and they are not on a computer. It seems to me people like to tell you what you are doing wrong and what you have to change.

I didn't say they were all young, did I?
I didn't say they were all snarky did I?
I didn't say it was a bad site, did I?
I just told about my personal experience of one incident that happened when I told the forum I hadn't lost any weight while sticking to my diet. It was the truth.
I've been a member for 15 years and still log on almost every day, I think it's a very helpful site.

ETA I just asked Google about the average age of MFP and got this "Audience composition can reveal a site's current market share across various audiences. myfitnesspal.com's audience is 45.81% male and 54.19% female. The largest age group of visitors are 25 - 34 year olds."
Which would make my statement that most of them are young correct.

Della and my statement that there are many older posters there is also correct. It seems to me that more of the high post count posters are older too.

I see you are now agreeing it is a helpful site - that wasn't the impression your previous post gave.

The only other forums I frequent are for camping and caravanning. Generally, people are polite and helpful, but one thing slightly irritates me. Sometimes people will ask questions when the answer can be found quite easily from the internet. Now, if they say, I've looked everywhere without success, so can anyone help, that's fine. But I think sometimes they just want someone to do the work for them.

I do that tho'... in that I don't ask a question if I can find it by doing the research myself... but rather if someone else is talking about a pet project or a subject they're interested in and I'm not sure exactly what it might entail, I will ask them rather than search for it myself, simply because it's their interest and I'm sure they would enjoy describing it to me, rather than me scuttle off , read about it, and not show any interest toward them,.

for example.. if Keto was something I didn't know about, and @katlupe was talking about it, I would ask HER for more info, rather than search fr it myself, because I like to show interest in other people's interests.

Katlupe said "It seems to me people like to tell you what you are doing wrong and what you have to change."

You bet, and this is because they need to try to control others ( probably because their own life is out of control.)

I put up with a 'friend' like that for years, until I had enough, because a real friend would not try to control anyone.

Not what I said. Of course you shouldn't, but there isn't a lot you can do about them over the 'net either. I'm saying if it upsets you, then avoid them. Or grow a thicker skin and ignore them.
