Some people never get wisdom teeth

I remember when I assumed everyone gets wisdom teeth and one of my former dentists corrected me.

As we said, up to 35% of people are born without wisdom teeth. The study we referred to earlier concluded that the absence of wisdom teeth is a result of evolution. As the human brain has expanded over hundreds of thousands of years and continues to do so, it is taking up increasing space in the skull. In order to make room for it, the jaw is shrinking, and the third molars are slowly disappearing. In the not so distant future, they’ll be the exception not the rule.

Hmmm. I'd say practically 100% of people are "born without them." I've never seen a baby born with teeth. :laugh:

I had 3...didn't have them pulled till I was in my 20's.

The anesthesia they gave me had me crying like a baby when I came to.

My husband had to pretty much carry me to the car.

I laid on the couch and spouted crazy stuff about California falling into the ocean when the earth quakes hit..

I'm envious of anyone who never had to deal with them.
3 of mine came in, 1 was impacted.
Had all 4 of them extracted when I was 24.
Not fun.

Mine were impacted and I had the 4 taken out at the same time so was put under local anesthesia and woke up while they were pulling them out. That was scary but I was glad to have them out. Impacted teeth aren’t much fun.
I was 30. My husband got his out when he was 30 as well. He used a student dentist.

When I had mine out, I woke up crying hard, too. What was that stuff? You're the first person I've ever heard say they had that experience, too. I thought maybe I was just weird.

I had all 4. Three removed in my teens, and one, (impacted), required surgery in my late twenties. Wisdom teeth do serve a purpose. In the days before dentists and oral health care, people lost more teeth than they do now so wisdom took the place of missing back molars and helped people chew and digest their food properly.
