Some thoughts on the Rose Parade

Grampa Don

Yep, that's me
I watched the Parade this morning. I turned off the sound. I don't need to hear all the details and the bands sound like noise to me anyway.

How do small towns have such huge high school bands? Little places I've never heard of have what looks like hundreds of marchers.

The parade is five and one half miles long. They never show what it looks like toward the end. I feel for the tuba and bass drum players, and I bet the dancers aren't as perky either.

Some of the floats had unusual sponsors; The Bachelor TV show, Western Asset (what the heck is that?), Reese's Peanut Butter Cup, and the Masked Singer.

Levar Burton was obviously having a good time.

In the old days, the floats would have pretty girls in scanty costumes. That has sure disappeared.

There were a lot of people in close proximity and many weren't wearing masks.

And finally, nothing says Happy New Year like a large black death machine flying over. What next, tanks?

My favorite marchers in the Rose Parade was years & years ago. The group was Lawyers, and they made music by clicking open & closing their briefcases. They were good!

5.5 miles long? Do you ever wonder where and when do all these people go to the bathroom? Also New Years Eve in time square? Mardi Gras? Any large shoulder to shoulder event where you can't even get to a port-a-potty. I don't want to know.

I suspect there are long lines at the end of the parade, and maybe some damp clothes. I read that there are first aid stations for people with sore feet.

I first watched the Rose Parade in glorious black and white while sitting on the floor in my pajamas in front of our TV, munching on something. That was in the mid 50's. It was a local thing then. I think KTLA was the only channel to carry it.
