The tiny island of Mingulay was until 1912 the southernmost inhabited of the Bishop's Isles off the North west of Scotland. The population which peaked at around 140 lived by fishing and cloth weaving before moving to larger islands or emigrating. Many of the islands have songs associated with them and Mingulay was no exception. The 'Mingulay boat song' tells of a fishing boat returning to port while the wives and children waited ashore.

Today the island is a nature reserve and owned by the National trust for Scotland.
