Sorry Jeopardy, you messed up the answer!

Bourbon County was not named after the grain based alcohol. It was named after the House of Bourbon, as was Bourbon Street. The name of the alcohol came much later and which one it is named after is still debated. The father of what became known as Bourbon, was Rev. Elijah Craig and the establishment of that first distillery was in what is now Scott County and back then was part of Fayette County.

Further confusing the matter, was the alcohol was shipped through Bourbon County, which at that time stretched all the way to the Ohio River. Thus the barrels were marked with the county the shipment began its trip down the Ohio River and eventually to New Orleans. I won't even get into the James Crow sour mash development or myth.

I lived 28 years in Bourbon County while working most of 18 years in Scott. The last 7 years I have lived in Scott. The local papers of both communities lay claim to Bourbon rights. I am not sure about Bourbon Street in New Orleans. They probably don't care.

I generally avoid the hoopla by preferring Crown Royal.
