In South Carolina, the sales tax is 6%. In order to reward our senior octogenarians for having paid sales tax all their lives, South Carolina has a law that allows persons age 85or older (with proof of age) a 1% reduction: 5%! Comments?
Maybe an election on the horizon? These little gimmicky things can grab a few votes from the -uh- less educated folks (to put it politely). Stuff like this isn't limited to S. Carolina - -it's fairly widespread. Another favorite is to promote some meaningless law to show someone is "tough on crime".
All in good fun here in the old U. S. of A.
Whoever the congress person was that initiated the bill and got it passed is an idiot and should not be reelected. A whopping 1% on anything is not beneficial to even the poor.
