As for piercing, I can't tolerate pain of any sort, no matter how small or of short duration. Besides, people admire the hairs that grow out of ears and that should be enough...

Admire ear hair? Gross. Totally gross.

I had my ears pierced by a 16 year old sis in law. She froze them with ice and used a sewing needle. Did a good job of getting the holes centred, even with my screams. This was nearly 40 years ago.
 
Screams! No thanks, the hairs are enough, and they come in different shades of grey...
