Sprite will no longer be sold in green bottles

Sprite is retiring its green plastic bottles after more than 60 years.

Coca-Cola said Wednesday it's changing the packaging from green to clear plastic beginning August 1 as part of broader efforts to become more environmentally responsible. Sprite's current plastic contains green polyethylene terephthalate (PET), an additive that can't be recycled into new bottles, a key initiative for the company as it looks to reduce plastic waste.

An eco-journalist on KGO Newstalk last week mentioned that in most areas, only #'s 1&2 are recyclable. I'm going to try and not buy anything else if possible. Exclude that if it's a needed medication etc. This cut out my soy yogurt and other stuff. Makes no difference in the grand scheme. But I don't know why they can't be packaged in the 1&2 recycle numbers.

They probably should ban plastics period, and go back to glass with mandatory return deposit. Plastic has become a nightmare scenario, to the point that it is now in everyone's body, and has polluted every corner of the planet.
I agree!

Imagine how much waste and money could be saved, and made if we were able to switch over to some sort of simple home carbonation system that would allow us to use name-band soda flavoring with carbonator sachets at home.

I haven't consumed any coke, sprite or those type drinks since the 1970s.
Information is limited about the chemical that isn't being moved to the new plastic bottle. Has the chemical been shown to cause health problems, or the bottle must be green instead of clean?

Some items are moving back to glass i remember way back when we were told (sold) the idea that plastic being lighter was saving fuel by a truck load of plastic bottles weighed less the full of glass and saving fuel was better ....lol
now we are coming full circle...
i wish more effort was put into recycling as it is now i do not think it is working as it should. melting down and reusing plastic is very toxic and is not really done as much as they want us to believe.
older pickup plan was a bin and collector put glass with glass / paper with paper / accepted plastics in correct section ...... NOW we just have a dump it all together sort it out later paper is ruined if it get wet yuk on it etc glass broken throughout and lots of unacceptable plastics just thrown in.

Yes, plastics have become a nightmare. Returning to glass would be great. Of course, the price of products would increase because glass is heavier than plastic and transporting it will be more costly. That's alright with me. I'd rather pay more for glass packaging than to keep ingesting plastic. It's killing us, our animals, and the planet.

Recycling is a mess. Will they ever get it together?

Never did like The Sprite in green.
I had a white one, red interior. An Mk ll, 1963 if I remember right. I got it in trade for some work I did on this old guy's field tractor. It was filthy, and it didn't run, but it didn't need any major parts - it had just sat too long, and rodents chewed up the wiring. Took me 3 months to thoroughly clean it, install new wiring, belts, filters, fluids. I also replace the brake pads and treated the vinyl a few times, even though it was in pretty decent shape for having sat outside in a field for about a year.

Anyway, after working on it daily for 3 months straight, I finally took her out for a drive, totally stoked, showing her off and all that - and the very next morning, I was reporting her stolen. Somehow, someone had slipped into my garage, fired her up, and drove off with her. Probably rolled her out to the street first. But I knew I'd get her back because where's a dumb car thief gonna hide something like that?

Well, apparently, he wasn't so dumb. I mean, he did steal her right out from under my nose. And I never saw my sweet little Sprite again; not on the street or at an auction, in a garage. I'm sure she wound up in Mexico or somewhere in South America.

That is being debated. Recently, that chemical, polyethylene terephthalate (PET), is being gradually removed from plastic baby bottles "to err on the side of caution."

I'm pretty sure information is limited because the companies that manufacture and sell it and the companies that buy it and use it don't want a public debate...various industries rely heavily on PET. NASA is one.

PET is used in fabrics, food, packaging, engines and machines, industrial belts and hoses, construction, agriculture, toys, and countless gadgets.

Sprite in clear glass or plastic will not look very appetizing....o_O

That's all well and good but we also need a way to clean up the plastics and other pollutants we have already distributed around the world. As humans we seem to exploit, devour and destroy everything we come in contact with with reckless abandon including each other. With the advent of the space age we are spreading our garbage throughout the cosmos. As a species we have the potential for great things. When will learn to live in harmony with nature and stop destroying it. It may already be to late. The scale might have already tipped beyond repair....😢

This is what I meant when I said older people are wise. So good that you took the time to make this point.

You can install whatever security you like, one thing a thief never goes armed with is the rotary arm inside the distributor. Whenever I leave the MG, the rotary arm comes out. For those whose knowledge of the internal combustion engine is limited, the rotary arm is the clever device that sends the electricity to the spark plug which then ignites the fuel.
