Statins

I take Cavstat (rosuvastatin 20mg) every morning, the generic brand for Crestor and have done for years. I just came across an article that said Crestor was taken off the market in US, which rattled me a bit. I know taking statins is controversial, but their purpose is to significantly lower risk of heart attack and stroke. So do you take statins?

A controversial new study found that high cholesterol does not shorten life span and that statins are essentially a “waste of time,” according to one of the researchers. Previous studies have linked statins with an increased risk of diabetes. The study reviewed research of almost 70,000 people and found that elevated levels of “bad cholesterol” did not raise the risk of early death from cardiovascular disease in people over 60. The authors called for statin guidelines to be reviewed, claiming the benefits of statins are “exaggerated.”…….

I wish they wouldn't do this - bring out new studies - it totally confuses people, what are we supposed to think?

I don't know how high your blood pressure is, but my systolic blood pressure has been as high as 170. In lieu of statins, I am taking Magnesium (which supports blood vessels) and drinking Beet Root Juice (which lowers blood pressure) and I have seen my systolic blood pressure lowered to 148. You should consult your doctor first, but these have worked for me. He has never prescribed a statin for me.

Only took them for a few weeks after my heart attack in 2009.. They gave me bad joint & muscle aches. I manage to have good HDL, LDL & total by watching diet & keeping moving. Triglycerides tend to be borderline high due to diabetes .

The function of statins is to help to control cholesterol levels, NOT blood pressure.

I used to take a statin drug. After I took control of my diet and got down to a healthy weight (BMI<25), my lipid levels fell into an acceptable range. I no longer need to use a statin.

Plant Sterols are good for cholesteral control and are natural. Statins do have side effects and diabetes issues (especially with women). Do think they are over prescribing.

Ahhh, right. Never mind.

Taking Statins can increase your risk of Diabetes 2
'It's possible your blood sugar (blood glucose) level may increase when you take a statin, which may lead to developing type 2 diabetes. The risk is small but important enough that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning on statin labels regarding blood glucose levels and diabetes'

I saw this program about diabetes last night and it was a revelation. This doctor has proved that we can actual reverse diabetes by changing our diet. Our indigenous communities are the worst affected. My shopping trolley today was totally different to last weeks, after seeing and believing what he had to say.

I take Rosuvastatin but don’t remember the mg’s. I haven’t heard about it being taken off the market.
This is the one my Dr changed me to this past month. This one is also a lot cheaper. He said my body gets used to them after a while so he has to keep changing every 6 years or so. It sure lowers my Cholesterol. I was taking Atorvastatin 80mg.

The only other thing is he also gives me (OTC) COQ-10. He said anyone taking a statin will get leg cramps, so the COq-10 will stop the cramps.

No leg cramps as long as I remember to take the CVoQ-10.
