That isn't the main point - it not letting me know he wasn't coming. He made the appointment over 2 weeks ago. I could understand if he let me know he wasn't going to show up, but I planned my whole day around him coming and waited...and waited...and waited with nary a word.

Houses ALWAYS need something done, don't they? If DH couldn't putter and take care of minor fixes, this big house would be on the market tout de suite. It's way more than I can - or would choose to - handle alone.

Thankfully I am still able to take care of the fixit needs. And help neighbors with their stuff. The difference with the neighbors is I involve them in their hands on doing the repairs. I've found that when they are hands on they really appreciate getting to know how to do something.

That's very kind of you - and wonderful that you're teaching them how to take care of things for themselves.
 
In his text message he asked if Tuesday worked for you? Isn’t that tomorrow that he was planning to come?

Yes, when you have to get an outside source to come fix something on your home that's when you get a taste of inflation. We had one side of our entrance gate rewelded - it cost
400 bucks to weld a hinge. At least he did it right.

You are a very good neighbor, @Knight. It also serves you well to educate them. Win-win!

Please don't take offense at this, but my son always has to explain and show me what he's done to fix something here. I have to "come there and look". I have to listen to the detailed explanation of what was done and why. Arrrgh.

I don't care! I will never do it. If I have to, I'll find another or hire someone. :ROFLMAO: I'm beyond learning new skills now.

But in truth, I wish I had you for a neighbor, Knight. Even if you try to teach... you cannot be as insistant as my wonderful son.

He probably is really happy to show you what he knows. There are a lot of parents that could only dream of the connection you have with your son.

What I help with is minor. Little things like light switch replacement. Toilet flush failures & what makes that happen. Most major would be trouble shooting automatic lawn sprinkler problems. Anything that requires code I won't deal with. I think more of the learning is about how they can take a failed part to Lowes or Home Depot, match it & pay only the retail price with no mark up. That and how many choices there are for getting the right part.

It is a win win for me because there were times when I needed a helping hand lifting something & that help was there for me.
 
My experiences with contractors has been rather grim.
A month ago I booked a contractor to make and install 3 new venetian blinds at a cost of $600. Time was booked for measuring, no show and no phone call to say why no show.
I booked an air conditioner service, no show and no phone call.
I booked a mobile mechanic, no show and no phone call.
Businesses here in Perth complain they are not getting enough work/going bust, but many seem to be not helping themselves.
