wow that's the first time I've heard of a supermarket stopping selling tobacco. I wonder if any supermarkets in the UK will follow suit. With more than 360 stores in the US North Eastern States, Stop and Shop has announced that it will stop selling tobacco products this week. It will join CVS drug stores, Target stores and Wal Mart, who have all ready stopped selling tobacco in their stores.

I don't want to quit. I enjoy smoking. I know it's hazardous to my health, but so are some of the ingredients in a lot of the food I eat (and I buy the same groceries that most people do), but I'm not going to quit eating, either. As a former smoker now not a smoker, here are my thoughts on such news:
- All smokers want to quit. But they can't.
Not being able to smoke in any business, or work place, would go a long way towards making smokers have to face their addiction head on. Thats how it is here in Canada. If somebody is being paid to be there, you can't smoke there. No smoking in bars, buses, trains, night clubs, and taxis. Less than 12 percent of adult Canadians smoke now, and the number is dropping every year here. Selling a vehicle that you smoked in for years? Get used to the idea that no car dealer is going to take that thing as a trade in, because of the stench of the tobacco in the interior .As a former smoker now not a smoker, here are my thoughts on such news:
- Stress is a major contributor (not the only one) to smoke.
- Making it harder to get the smoking fix increases the stress only.
- It does not help smokers quit in any way.
- All smokers want to quit. But they can't.
- Reducing societal stress, societal relaxation, and societal help (not looking down at smokers) may help.
it's the same here..no smoking in any buildings aside from your own home and garden.... no smoking in restaurants or bars..or pubs... It's a long time since I was in a nightclub but I presume as it's a public building the same rule applies. No smoking on any public transport... that includes Vaping. Not being able to smoke in any business, or work place, would go a long way towards making smokers have to face their addiction head on. I used to smoke. I quit . It was hard, but that is what you have to do. Stop buying the things. JIMB.
the thing is as well, the Tax on cigarettes in the UK is so high, it goes some way towards paying for the NHS...now the more they ban smoking for ''health reason'' the less money they're going to have to pay for the National health service and people who have smoking related diseases.. and even if they banned smoking today everywhere, people will be suffering from smoking related diseases for at least another 50 years !I agree with @Murrmurr ; not ALL smokers want to quit and that's their perogative besides, you can't make someone quit or shame them into quitting. Quitting is a decision only they can make because yes, it is very hard to quit for most so if their heart isn't in it, then it's not going to happen. They will fall off the wagon at some point!
Arguments about smokers causing causing harm to healthcare because they're using up vital resources which wouldn't put strain on the system if they quit is becomming less and less relevant as more and more people quit for their own reasons. To others, smoking is one of their significant pleasures in life so I say let them be. I was in that group for decades ... until I wasn't; my choice!
Taxes on smokes here in Canada are also very high; and going ever higher each year. We also have a publically funded healthcare system, as do you. I'm never quite sure if their ever increasing taxes (sin taxes) are for the purpose of supporting the haelthcare system, which smokers use disproportionately, or is it to encourage people to quit smoking by putting more pressure on their available funds. Possibly both?the thing is as well, the Tax on cigarettes in the UK is so high, it goes some way towards paying for the NHS...now the more they ban smoking for ''health reason'' the less money they're going to have to pay for the National health service and people who have smoking related diseases.. and even if they banned smoking today everywhere, people will be suffering from smoking related diseases for at leasanother 50 years !
We have a tobacco tax as well. And I'm pretty sure it's a federal tax, and every state charges it. I used to be able to get around paying it because I owned a license to sell it....er, resell it.the thing is as well, the Tax on cigarettes in the UK is so high, it goes some way towards paying for the NHS...now the more they ban smoking for ''health reason'' the less money they're going to have to pay for the National health service and people who have smoking related diseases.. and even if they banned smoking today everywhere, people will be suffering from smoking related diseases for at least another 50 years !

That's true. There is no evidence to show any one food causes lung cancer. There is some evidence that eating red meat, processed meat and drinking alcohol could raise your risk of lung cancerFood can't give you lung cancer. Let's be frank, Frank.
