I think that's good. I haven't smoked since 1985, so I paid little attention to it. I didn't realize Walmart had stopped selling cigarettes. I do remember the chain Longs Drugs in California sold cigarettes.

wow that's the first time I've heard of a supermarket stopping selling tobacco. I wonder if any supermarkets in the UK will follow suit.

In Spain you can't buy cigarettes or tobacco in a supermarket.. nor can you buy OTC meds... they have Strictly government controlled Tabac shops for the cigarettes.. and the Farmacias are the only place you can buy Meds of any kind...

As a former smoker now not a smoker, here are my thoughts on such news:
  • Stress is a major contributor (not the only one) to smoke.
  • Making it harder to get the smoking fix increases the stress only.
  • It does not help smokers quit in any way.
  • All smokers want to quit. But they can't.
  • Reducing societal stress, societal relaxation, and societal help (not looking down at smokers) may help.
Not being able to smoke in any business, or work place, would go a long way towards making smokers have to face their addiction head on. Thats how it is here in Canada. If somebody is being paid to be there, you can't smoke there. No smoking in bars, buses, trains, night clubs, and taxis. Less than 12 percent of adult Canadians smoke now, and the number is dropping every year here. Selling a vehicle that you smoked in for years? Get used to the idea that no car dealer is going to take that thing as a trade in, because of the stench of the tobacco in the interior .

I used to smoke. I quit . It was hard, but that is what you have to do. Stop buying the things. JIMB.

I agree with @Murrmurr ; not ALL smokers want to quit and that's their perogative besides, you can't make someone quit or shame them into quitting. Quitting is a decision only they can make because yes, it is very hard to quit for most so if their heart isn't in it, then it's not going to happen. They will fall off the wagon at some point!

Arguments about smokers causing causing harm to healthcare because they're using up vital resources which wouldn't put strain on the system if they quit is becomming less and less relevant as more and more people quit for their own reasons. To others, smoking is one of their significant pleasures in life so I say let them be. I was in that group for decades ... until I wasn't; my choice!

it's the same here..no smoking in any buildings aside from your own home and garden.... no smoking in restaurants or bars..or pubs... It's a long time since I was in a nightclub but I presume as it's a public building the same rule applies. No smoking on any public transport... that includes Vaping.
In todays' media it's reported that the new government is going to ban smoking in outdoor areas where it's allowed now..like pub gardens ..or parks...

I don't smoke and like all non smokers I hate to be walking behind someone who is smoking, and I get to breathe in their smoke..that's disgusting... but trying to ban smoking outdoors is a step too far IMO

the thing is as well, the Tax on cigarettes in the UK is so high, it goes some way towards paying for the NHS...now the more they ban smoking for ''health reason'' the less money they're going to have to pay for the National health service and people who have smoking related diseases.. and even if they banned smoking today everywhere, people will be suffering from smoking related diseases for at least another 50 years !

Taxes on smokes here in Canada are also very high; and going ever higher each year. We also have a publically funded healthcare system, as do you. I'm never quite sure if their ever increasing taxes (sin taxes) are for the purpose of supporting the haelthcare system, which smokers use disproportionately, or is it to encourage people to quit smoking by putting more pressure on their available funds. Possibly both?

We have a tobacco tax as well. And I'm pretty sure it's a federal tax, and every state charges it. I used to be able to get around paying it because I owned a license to sell it....er, resell it.

Our backy tax funds smoker-related health studies and cessation literature, and subsidizes some types of cancer treatment.

While some stores may have good intentions about not selling tobacco, I think it's tobacco sales aren't worth the time & grief to check IDs, and unlock storage units, etc. And after cash, robbers like to steal them.

I don't want to quit. I enjoy smoking. I know it's hazardous to my health, but so are some of the ingredients in a lot of the food I eat (and I buy the same groceries that most people do), but I'm not going to quit eating, either.
Food can't give you lung cancer. Let's be frank, Frank. I totally understand your love of the product, but facts is facts.

That's true. Studies show that toxic food additives and chemicals used in farming and food processing can cause disorders such as hyperactivity, anxiety, premature maturation and early dementia, a loss of bone density, stomach cancer, liver disease, and various neurological disorders...to name a few.

My point between the lines is that the FDA makes noise and does a lot of virtue-signalling over tobacco but not food. I don't understand that. They can easily address both issues, so I assume there's a reason why they don't do anything to ban toxins in our food. ($$$)

Their first name is Food. And everyone eats, including children. Only some people use tobacco and the majority of them are adults.

I'm a non-smoker, and have never smoked. My wife is a smoker, and has always been a smoker.

I cannot understand why tobacco wasn't banned years ago. That is, yes, I realize that the very governments talking of bans now have had their own addiction to the tax revenue from tobacco sales for decades, but if they actually cared about the health issues, they'd of banned it a long time ago.

Now we have a vape problem. And so it goes.
