Strawberry shortcake with no strawberries, who uses a different fruit?

Our local store makes really good shortcake, sponge cake, light and fluffy. We only have frozen strawberries so I took my canned very cherry fruit cocktail, put it on the shortcake with whipped cream, yummy.

Toss blackberries in a blender with a little sugar, pour over shortcake and top with whip cream, yum yum.

Yes, and pretty soon we will be getting fresh local peaches here in South Carolina.
And I don't care what those people from Georgia claim. Ours are much, much tastier.

Strawberries or peaches over warm buttered baking powder biscuits with freshly whipped cream.

When my grandmother got old she used to put the fruit over store-bought sponge cups and top it with whipped cream from a can.



That was pretty impressive to a little country bumpkin but now I realize how awful it was and just laugh at my young self.
