sudden knee area pain

I didn't even know I had a problem until I got on my hands and knees to plug in the vacuum cleaner. I thought I had kneeled on broken glass. Even after I got back up, it continued to have a sort of burning, tingling feeling for a while. It's all right except when I have to get on my knees, or have to lean against anything that presses on that area. If I press on that area with a finger or thumb, nothing - it's only if I put my weight on or against it. It isn't in the knee proper, but more on the side of the leg below the knee where the tibia and fibula come together (see attached pic for approx. location). If I hold my fingertips to the area and flex my knees, I can feel crepitus. I tired to find info online, but like most things where there's a lot of movement going on and things are close together, it's difficult to pin down a cause. Of course I realize there are probably not any medical professionals on this board and even if so, could not diagnose without exam or tests, but any speculation what's going on?

A few years ago I fell off a ladder and tore through the meniscus and dislocated my knee. I wore a brace for awhile and had rounds of physical therapy since. It isn't my knee joint. I had injections, nothing helped. I have good days and bad. Maybe you just over stretched. Try ice or heat. No more than 20 minutes on 20 minutes off. Also try some Advil if your stomach can handle it. You might have some osteoarthritis going on. Rest it also. If it isn't feeling better in a few days you probably should see a doctor.

No swelling could be a good sign. Could be a bruised area or one chip when pressed hits a nerve. Same if a growth, insect bite/sting, imbedded small stone etc.

If no swelling I'd try some very basic knee flexibility exercise/stretches.

Good Luck

I had a similar experience a few years back.

Prior to the "pins in my knees" I had spent a few years making equipment as a hobby in my home that required me to get on my knees on the carpet a good bit and I never had a problem with my knees. So I had a good reference point. After putting that aside for a year or two, I decided to make something again and when I got on my knees it was like someone put pins in them.

I then started taking glucosamine supplements. I don't know how long it took but as I recall the relief was gradual. I don't have that particular problem anymore and it's been a few years. I now get on the floor on my knees occasionally to attend to my dog so I'm confident that whatever caused the "pins in my knees" problem is behind me.
