"Doug, I'm thinking I'd like to start roller blading."
"What? You've never tried it. Besides, remember when we went cross country skiing? You kept falling down."
"And???"
"Sue, you have no sense of balance."
"Maybe I'll be better on roller blades."
"Look, I don't want you to get hurt. We'll have to get you all the required equipment. AND, I think you should take lessons."
"That seems extreme. Why can't you teach me?"
"Well, I could but I don't want to. "
"Oh."
So, off we go to the local sporting good store to get the necessary equipment.
I tell the guy at the store that my Wife wants to roller blade...
"Does she skate?"
"No."
"Well, " he says, "Does she cross country ski? That's good for the balance. "
"She did...Once...Kept falling."
"And she wants to roller blade? Wow......"
Anyway, to make a long story short, we purchased for Sue, Roller blades, elbow pads, knee pads, helmet and special roller blade pants which are heavily padded for when she falls down....Which she will.
After we get home Sue immediately changes into her new rollerblading outfit.
"How do I look?" she asks.
"You look like someone who is about to embark on a great adventure."
"Really? I don't like the pants. They make me look chubby."
"I noticed."
"You did? Maybe I should just wear my running shorts. At least they look ok."
"Nope it's the padded pants or you're not going outside to rollerblade."
"Ok....Will you help me put on the skates...I mean, blades? I don't wanna fall...yet."
So, I help her on with the blades. She stands up and I wheel her to the door, open it and help her out into the world. She stands there, on her rollerblades somewhat wobbly.
"What do I do now?, " she asks.
"You start to skate."
"How...."
"You put one skate behid you and sort of shove off."
Sue thought about this for a bit. Finally, with a grunt and a yelp off she went....About five feet, keeled over and fell solidly on her padded pants.
She sat there, looking up at me ...." THAT was NOT fun!"
While I sympathized with her, I had a hard time not to chuckle.....Which I did anyway....
"You know something Sue? I'm thinking it's a good thing you wore those padded pants. I mean..."
Sue moaned a bit, extended her hand to me. I helped her up onto her skates.
"So, I'M thinking, " She said, " That's enough for today. Would you please wheel me home?"
Which I did. After removing her skates for her we went into the house. I made the coffee and Sue got out the cookies......Roller blading was for another day. I must say, though, those padded pants DO look cute.....
