Independent pharmaceutical testing company Valisure recently found that 78 lots of sunscreens and sun care products contained benzene, a known carcinogen that has been linked to blood cancer and other illnesses. Of the 78 batches with detectable levels, 40 products were found to have "significantly detected" levels of benzene.

In response, Johnson and Johnson announced on July 14 that it is voluntarily recalling select Neutrogena and Aveeno aerosol spray sunscreens "out of an abundance of caution."

The recall affects the following products:

  • Neutrogena Beach Defense aerosol sunscreen
  • Neutrogena Cool Dry Sport aerosol sunscreen
  • Neutrogena Invisible Daily defense aerosol sunscreen
  • Neutrogena Ultra Sheer aerosol sunscreen
  • Aveeno Protect + Refresh aerosol sunscreen

Benzene was found in some lots of these sunscreens.

“There is not a safe level of benzene that can exist in sunscreen products," stated Dr. Christopher Bunick, associate professor of dermatology at Yale University in Valisure's press release. "Even benzene at 0.1 ppm in a sunscreen could expose people to excessively high nanogram amounts of benzene."

Of course, our usual is one of these. Now to look for a substitute. Mineral ones are horrid on the arms and legs, especially for men.

Thanks for posting this, Jules.
It's so disappointing to have products, so widely sold and used,
for health purposes, need to be recalled.

But I guess, it's better than never recalling them.
I wish they'd test more batches, more often, before distribution.

It seems more surprising when it's the better brands, like many of these are, this time.
