Surprised to see mosaic art in the New York subway.

Just recently I posted about my trip to NYC to see the Brooklyn Bridge. I also got to ride on a subway for the first time in my life. When we went down the steps I noticed some beautiful mosaic tile art on the wall very close to the ceiling. I thought it was so beautiful. I haven't had the time to research this,but I will. I wondered if all the subways have it and how old it is. It really took me by surprise. It was so dirty and poorly lit as I entered I never expected to see something like this and still intact. I bet cleaned up it would be stunning.

Beautiful. Too bad it's in such poor condition. I did a quick search and found that this Marine Grill mural by Frederick Dana Marsh was made in 1913, and installed in the subway in 2000. Thanks GrannyB. for the info. I didn't see any other murals and actually have know idea where I saw this one. I was with my daughter and family on a NYC outing. I have a very bad sense of direction so I just trail along,enjoy the sights, and am so happy that they always ask me to come with them.

I saw a gorgeous mosaic mural a couple of years ago in the NY subway. It looked pretty new......at least nobody had defaced it yet so that's a sign that it hasn't been there long.
