Take off your shoes, please. What is the rule at your house for guests ?

I do have (laundered) heavy socks on hand, in various sizes, just in case someone wants to take off their shoes.

We take our own slippers or a pair of clean socks to put on, when visiting relatives. One sister has tons of
washable slippers for guests. We've always removed our shoes upon entering the house.
Great ideas! Providing clean footwear is an excellent accommodation for guests who are requested to remove their shoes.
I've always thought carpeting was disgusting. I didn't know other people thought that too!
I've never thought carpeting was disgusting - can't imagine why anyone would.
you know what.. when my carpets get taken up, there's next to no dirt..only litle foam crumbs from the underlay...
Same here. Long ago, when my carpet was being replaced, I commented to the installer that I was shocked about how much dirt had drifted through dirty it was underneath. He chuckled and explained that it was bits of the underlay crumbling over time and pressure, not dirt.

We vacuum weekly and have no pet hair issues because our dog doesn't shed. Carpets are usually cleaned professionally annually. Any spots or pet accidents are cleaned immediately with carpet detergent, water and then more water.

I know my carpets are plenty clean because I often wear white socks around the house during winter.

I told my woman that
especially the once in a while part
She paid no mind
Kept sweeping
.....and dusting
Too much needless (futile) work IMO

The wood floors at the cabin are not thin like typical wood floors
No
They're 2x6s
Screwed to 4x4s
Rock solid
You just have to accept that you're literally part of the environment.

Previous cabin life is why I don't dust until someone taps me on the shoulder and says, "Um....your stuff is dusty."

I'm curious, I wear sandals year round, no socks, and when I go to other people's homes I always remove my footwear. I often wonder if others find it offensive, my feet are always clean but is it still an issue for some?

For now we're living with carpeting. To be fair the upkeep is less, especially with a non-shedding dog. Carpets don't show every water droplet ring, dust, tiny bits of debris, or allow dust bunnies to breed under furniture. Vacuuming may be a pain, but sweeping and mopping don't bring any thrills either.
I'm glad someone else sees it my way. The house we lived in before this one had beautiful hardwood floors throughout. Every week I would first swiffer, then mop, then wax those floors. My son and I got plantar fasciitis from walking on them. They were extremely noisy and caused an echo in the rooms with high ceilings.

So when this house was built 17 years ago we had nice, pale taupe, wall to wall, Berber carpet everywhere except the white ceramic tile in kitchen and baths. I can swing through the whole house in 20 minutes of easy vacuuming. We had it shampooed for the first time last winter and the cleaner said it was still extremely clean. It's quiet and our plantar fasciitis was gone after the first month.

We all three routinely remove our shoes in the garage before we come in. I don't care if it's dry or muddy the bottom of our shoes have stepped in things all day we don't even want to think about.

I would never ask guests to remove their shoes.
