After 23 year's I did it today. This past January I semi retired and stayed on my job of 23 years to help get someone trained. The guy they hired to replace me was way over confident and did not have the skills to do the job. I was getting frustrated and stressed.
So today was my last day. No notice for them as they do not deserve any. The guy the hired started at more money than I made after 23 years with the company and cannot do half what I do. I wished them the best and packed my stuff.
I will be looking for some part time work to supplement my social security. I did give my goodbyes to about 6 people that I considered friends after all the years. It was still hard to let go. But I will be in a better place after this circus.
 

Congrats on the transition!

I just quietly moonwalked away from my shipping company job of 25 years...no sweeping goodbyes...no fanfare...basically said 'see ya!'

I'm ready now for some part-time employment elsewhere...on my schedule...my way...of course.

Congratulations and enjoy. That reminds of a job I had for 17 years and suddenly just quit. A small manufacturing job with a relaxed atmosphere and great people like family. They brought in new young management and started getting strict. No more talking and faster production. The final straw for me was raising our hands to use the bathroom. That was it. I just walked out along with several others.

Don’t be surprised if your company doesn’t call you to come back, even on a part time basis. I spent 37 years in the state police and 2 weeks after I retired, I was offered jobs working in the evidence department and also training new Cadets on how to handle a crime scene. I went back part time for 2 years, but decided it wasn’t as exciting as being in uniform and on patrol, so I left.

I've been there, several months after I retired I kept getting calls to return. Nope!
 
Good for you! I had to work much longer than I intended because I needed the money.

So many times, young, rude employees moved up the ladder while experienced hard-working older people were let go at different institutions I worked at in the past. And no, these older people were not dead wood, they were just not young enough for management. And I myself as a receptionist was let go at 51 years old and then at 60 years old. I got another position luckily and finally retired at 67. The happiest day of my life.
