Talk To Me About Doing Dishes By Hand.

I know this was discussed someplace recently on this forum. But my automatic dishwasher is no longer working and I don't trust these new max profit apartment owners to ask for a repair.

I hope the AC doesn't go out because that is something I would have to have repaired.

I have dishes in the sink I have to go tackle. I don't know how they became that many in a couple of days. I have to think of a way to save using dishes and utensils also.

Wash dishes by hand people, what do you do.?

Also even with the rains, my thought is always saving water and I'm trying to use as little as possible even with hand washing.

I've NEVER had a dishwasher! Don't even know how to use one!
Wash the dishes as soon as you can after the meal to make the kitchen
clean again. Or, Soak them in hot water for 10 minutes or so and they
are easier to wash. Look at it as fun, not drudgery.

I wash by hand whatever I use as soon as I'm done, never leave anything sit in the sink. But I do leave them in the drying rack until next use, the only things I put in the cupboard are pots and pans.

I guess I've been using the same plate, bowl, cup, glass, knife, spoon and fork for about ten years now.lol

Scrape and soak as soon as possible after eating. Stack things neatly so it’s not such a turn off when it’s time to do the dishes. Wash them every evening. Wash, rinse and let air dry on a rack for half an hour or less. They‘ll dry up quickly and you can put them away.

I wash something and rinse. The water goes into the same sink. It’s never more than half full so you’re not using excessive amounts of water.

For the sake of the environment, avoid paper plates and disposable items, except for the rare occasion.

For a person living alone, you could get by with a large bowl or dish pan to soak dishes (right away) and then wash once or twice a day leaving them dry in a rack.

For our household of three, we basically wash nearly everything off the dishes and load them into our old Bosch dishwasher to do a quick wash that takes 30 min. The dishes dry nicely and the dishwasher serves as a "finishing" washer and glorified dish rack, saving time on towel drying and space on the counter. Our dishwasher does not properly clean on a regular cycle with dishes that are not prewashed - I am fairly certain it is due to our hard water. So unless we get a water softener, I am not going to bother with a new dishwasher as we have had at least two others that also failed to wash properly.

It's an ongoing problem! I use paper plates whenever possible, and disposable storage bags as well. But it hardly helps at all, because I still have eating utensils, cooking pots and utensils, storage containers, etc., etc.

Probably the easiest thing would be to do the dishes after each meal. But to me, that kind of ruins my enjoyment of the meal. I like to relax after.

Sometimes I try to work it into my housework routine/system, but that just adds to the day's drudgery.

I have a bin where I hide my dirty dishes (so they don't clutter up the sink or counter). Then I have a mammoth task waiting for me.

Best method so far (for me): Do dishes once every day or two. Wash china, glass, and metal first. If you use hot water, they dry quickly and you can put them away. Then wash plastics and let them drip dry overnight.

Maybe try different things and figure out what's least painful for you. Good luck.

I do the same as most others, I wash dishes as I use them. I never leave dishes for more than one day.. and I absolutely never go out and leave dirty dishes in the sink, that gives me anxiety...

As for someone not having hot water for several months.. if that happened to me it wouldn't phase me too much. I lived my entire life childhood with having to boil water to get water to wash dishes and to bathe in,.

Oh my gosh what did you do with no water?
We had a dug well and the only guy we could get to fix it couldn’t do it until the spring. I had to take baths in those plastic storage bins and boil water for everything. Luckily my husband took the laundry to the laundry mat each week so he had a nicer dog house to live in while we had no water. Lol 😝😉
( kidding )

Plus we had to travel about 15 miles every few weeks to fill up containers full of water from an underground steam with a tap. Anybody could get fresh free water which was our saving grace

Remy, ask for the repair, it's an appliance just like your fridge. You pay rent and if an appliance is not working then they should repair. What happens if you move, they would have to repair it then.

I have never owned a dishwasher. I wash all of my dishes by hand. As I cook, I wash and put away as I go. After I eat, I wash them immediately. I have never left dishes in the sink to wash later. Just keep up on it and they never pile up.

Yup
I haven't actually done that, but I've seen it done (I'm rarely let in the kitchen)

When I was single, I just ate over the sink
Outa the pot I cooked in
Then put that pot in the fridge for tomorrow
Once that pot was empty....rinsed that pot......made new stuff

Oh, I did rinse a spoon a few times
My coffee cup was well seasoned
As far as drinks.....well, that's what milk jugs and juice/beer bottles are about

I have a dishwasher but have only used this one twice in the past three years. I'm not a big fan of dishwashers, except that they do make good storage places....LOL.

I wash dishes once or twice a day and can't go to sleep if there's a dish in the sink. It's not that big a chore. You do it and it's over.

Oh, and I'll admit I use paper plates frequently.

With only the two of us, there would be no reason to run it daily and I can't stand to think of dirty dishes sitting in there for 2-3 days before washing.

I've got the drying rack on top of the refrigerator along with the washing tub. I have absolutely no counter room to keep the rack out.

I think keeping things washed up instead of letting them pile up on one side of the divided sink is a good idea.

Good ideas post and I agree. Thank you.

I still have the lovely vintage Mikasa Japan blue flower plates I got the Goodwill in the dishwasher. The thing crapped out on me when I went to wash them. I bailed the water out and made sure it was dry.

I think I need to go with washing daily but probably not on the two days I work.

@Lee and @Jules I know I'm not being rational but working part time, no one else would rent to me. I still keeping looking for the mobile in the park and hope to move.

What I do know is they are updating the apartments when people move out with pergo flooring, full painting, of the apartment and I don't know what else. Then upping the rent and they seem to get new people in very fast after working on the apartment. California does have some rent control so they can only up the rent a certain percent for renters in the apartment but they can up it to whatever they want for new renters. And of course, what people will pay.

So my thought process is why repair for me when they can fix it for the new people and get more money. I just want out of here.

My house came with a dishwasher. It has never been used. I store bags in it.
I've always washed dishes by hand. I never saw the use for a dishwasher. You have to scrub off food anyway before putting them in the dishwasher.
But I don't like to spend much time doing dishes, so whenever there are 5 or 6 dishes & a few spoons & forks in the sink, I do them.
