Talk To Me About Doing Dishes By Hand.

I use paper plates for dinner/breakfast but washing the pans, pour in water squirt soap. Heat up, scrub all around, dump, rinse twice spray vinegar on it, let dry.

No food poisoning in 2 years...

I know this was discussed someplace recently on this forum. But my automatic dishwasher is no longer working and I don't trust these new max profit apartment owners to ask for a repair.

I hope the AC doesn't go out because that is something I would have to have repaired.

I have dishes in the sink I have to go tackle. I don't know how they became that many in a couple of days. I have to think of a way to save using dishes and utensils also.

Wash dishes by hand people, what do you do.?

Also even with the rains, my thought is always saving water and I'm trying to use as little as possible even with hand washing.
Back when I was younger, before we were married and lived in apartments, I had dishwashers and hated them. Had to scrape and rinse beforehand, just thought it easier to just wash them in the sink, like my mother always did.

I go to bed with an empty and clean sink, never let them pile up. I put a drop of dish soap (Dawn) and water into the pot, dish or bowl.....then when I go to wash them it's easy. We buy paper plates from Costco or Sam's Club, so I always have them ready in the kitchen to use for certain meals like sandwiches, hamburgers, etc.

I have a tankless water heater, doesn't take that long to get hot for dish washing. When I visit other people who use dishwashers, I notice their cups and plates are not that clean when they empty the washer.

Saying she feels that she gets them cleaner by hand washing mama never has used the dish washer and we've been here right at 40 years.......she uses it as storage for onions, taters, Ramen noodles and a few Walmart plastic bags.

She doesn't let dishes sit in the sink overnight either......everything is washed and put in the dish rack to air dry and since I always get up before she does I put all the dishes, pots & pans and silverware away when I get up.

I'm in the minority here folks.....I love my dishwasher and would never go without one. And you know they say it uses less water than running a tap to wash dishes.
Depends on how you run the tap. I run the tap until the water is hot, then turn it down to a trickle, then scrub each dish & utensil with detergent & a "Scrub Daddy" (abrasive sponge). Then I turn the water up just enough to rinse. That uses way less than a dishwasher.

As a child living in foster homes,, I was always the one tasked with washing all the dishes all the time. I developed a fairly strong dislike of it. I have a portable dishwasher that I put as much in every day as possible and use the dishwasher at least once a day. My daughter does the balance by hand and dries them in the rack on the counter. There are four of us here so there's quite an accumulation of dishes.

There's the story about the man who went to visit his elderly father. At supper, he noted that his father's dishes weren't as clean as they could have been. He asked his father if he was using the new dishwasher that the son had had installed.

The crotchety old father said, "No, I don't like that contraption. My dishes get as clean as cold water can get them."

"Dad!" protested the son. "You need to wash your dishes in hot water or use the dishwasher."

"Nope, they're as clean as cold water can get them."

His dad would not change his mind, so the son gave up. Supper over, the old guy put the dishes on the floor and yelled to the dog in the next room, "COLDWATER, YOU DUMB MUTT! GET IN HERE AND DO YOUR JOB!

Is washing dishes really such a big deal ? Dish washers ? paper plates ? WTF ?

Run a bowl, of hot water, add a squirt of washing up liquid, wear rubber gloves and get on with it, using a scouring pad if necessary, rinse and leave to dry, takes about 5 minutes, I do it every day

Admittedly I live alone now, but still washed up by hand when I had seven kids to look after

ive never had or wanted a dishwasher......yep , washing up by hand i think is more hygienic ..

Soooo…what is your dishwasher not doing? Do you have lights? If not reset your GFI. If you have power but the machine will not compleat the cycle Google ypur brand and model and perform the reset. I had a dishwasher that often had to be reset…it would not drain until I ran the reset cycle.

I do both.....always have a sink of hot soapy water when I'm cooking, I wash all cookware by hand, the rest goes in the dishwasher.

Seems by the time you’ve rinsed the dishes etc. and stacked the machine properly you could’ve finished the washing up anyway...

I think that when you have a dishwasher you'll use it but if you didn't it would not be that big a deal unless you had company. But, usually when you have company they offer to help and all will get washed and dried, no problem.
Sometimes I'd rather have the extra cupboard space, but then I'd just fill it with stuff I don't need. 😉

People also just use them as a store cupboard and hardly ever empty them thoroughly x

I ll stick to my Fairy Hands lol

I'm with you Lee on this topic. .... I have all the time in the world to hand wash dishes, but I wouldn't.

Dishwasher uses less water .... and much hotter water than my hands could ever stand.
Also the drier is very HOT ... I cannot touch any dishes until they've cooled down.
Cascade Platinum/ Complete Pods are amazing also.

I use my dishwasher in Spain.. cuz I have it.. altho' I do handwash when there's just a few things.. and here in the UK if I have a lot of dishes particualrly if I've baked something and the pan is very greasy, I do wish that I had a dishwasher here.. but in general day to day use, with just me here.. ut takes 2 minutes to wash the dishes I;ve used, under piping hot water. I wear gloves, and the dishes are quickly cleaned up, and I don't have to use elctricity, or specialist dishwasher tabs, etc.. to get those few plates and cutlery washed .,

For the just the two of us, I run the dishwasher every other day. Pots and pans, coffee pot and anything else that doesn’t go in the dishwasher are washed by hand at dinner time. I turn the dry cycle off on mine so they dry by heat alone. Everything sparkles, as long as I use Cascade like @JustBonee does.

It fills and then the motor doesn't work. It had been sounding off for a time and then finally went out. I think it's the original, so over 30 years old at this point. I'm about as non-DIY as one can get.

I used the economy dry setting. But I think the dishwasher is more hygenic. Also I tend to clang my dishes more washing by hand and all my dishes are vintage and I don't want to break them.

I'm being very misery with the water doing them by hand. If I ever find a mobile and it doesn't have a DW, I can probably use rinse water on plants. I use only natural soap products.

Blue are harder to find. Mikasa vintage Japan. Was thrilled to find these at GW. Dinner and salad plates. 49 cents each. These are still sitting in the DW. I was going to wash them and that's when the thing went out.
