Tell Me About COBRA

I just got a notice from the insurance I had through my job. It was dental coverage only. Now since they dumped me I have the option of paying for COBRA and having to pay $70 a month for family coverage, $30 just for me. Does that make sense or just better to use Care Credit here and there? We don't do regular checkups although we should. Hubby should probably have a whole mouth overhaul. He hasn't been to a dentist in years. With his other physical issues I didn't push it. Don't you wish they would give you advance notice? In six months we're canning you. Get all your dental work done right now. COBRA or just Care Credit, your opinion?

I don't know anything about Care Credit, but I do know that COBRA is very expensive for what you actually get (at least in medical coverage it is). Would your dentist be covered under COBRA? What kind of procedures would it cover, and how much?

1 ditto.gif...Very expensive!!

Most dental insurance do not cover very much!! I believe dentures are not covered..

How much longer before you are 65?? Although Medicare does not cover dentures either..

COBRA basically allows you to keep your existing coverage for up to 18 months, but you pay (I believe) 102% of the actual premium the company has to pay. In essence you're paying for the policy they negotiated, plus a service fee. As to whether you should keep dental insurance, Ken is right I suspect. Really doesn't cover much when you factor in the cost of the insurance and any premiums you have shelled out. That said, dental health is important, as when neglected it has the potential to lead to more serious health issues.

Yeah even THEIR paperwork says they're expensive. It's almost like they're mocking you...see if you had been an obedient worker ant you wouldn't have to worry about this stuff. The heck with it I'll just do Care Credit when need be. Hubby is 58 and I'm 53. Guess this must be our middle years- old enough for AARP but too young for Medicare.

Do you guys have a regular dentist? My husband's Cobra is expiring in January. While he was at his dentists office, he asked what plan they would recommend for seniors. They have a coverage through them or something like that for about $50 a month and covers what he has had through his job. For my husband, he's been going to the same dentist for 35 years and really doesn't want to change and this plan being offered seems decent.

I've never had dental coverage that has been worth much. I just pay for my own work. My long-time dentist is very reasonable and I wouldn't change. I"m blessed with very good teeth (I still have 'em all), so that helps.

Dental insurance is great for cleaning and fillings but not more than that..So I am told...

That's true... most plans have a limit of somewhere around $1000 a year.. Everyone knows that's a drop in the bucket for major dental work.. A better term would be "dental assistance" rather than insurance. I've dropped my plan this year.
