MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Official word rang out on Monday that Miami Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton had been signed to the most lucrative contract in sports history.
The Marlins and Stanton agreed upon a 13-year deal worth $325 million, which pays the slugger $25 million per season.

Hope the Marlins end up in last place for the next 5 years.:D
 

I agree... and people begrudge Doctors the money they make.. yet this is OK? We seriously have some really screwed up priorities in this country.
 
Well, at least he is an American, so we can get some tax money out of him. Lots of tax money. There isn't enough loopholes for this guy to slip through.
 

But think of all of the pressure he will be under to prove himself, poor guy, at least emotionally...
 
I will never pay to go to a pro baseball game. I prefer to watch the minor league guys. The only way that I go to a pro game is if I get free tickets, which does happen occasionally.

It's gotten so only the well off can attend a pro game of any venue. A day at the Ball Park used to be an inexpensive way for a family to have an outing.. It no longer is. BUT.. why be surprised. All the leagues are owned and operated by billionaires.. They are playing to their own kind. The rest of us schmucks can watch on TV... provided the games are not blacked out due to poor ticket sales.. lol!!
 
I don't get shocked when I read/hear about something like this. Sports figures make the high salaries, no matter what sport it is. Sports announcer's make big bucks as well. Just the way it is today! One thing for sure, it's obvious that someone thinks this dude is worth the salary he's going to get. And, if there a number of us that can't afford to attend those pro games, there are plenty of people who can and do. The incomes of a lot of younger generations are much higher than when we were their age.

There are Heavy Metal bands that sell out arena's all over the world and make millions as well, so it's not just sports figures.
 
It doesn't seem very fair does it.. an afternoon at the ball park is as American as apple pie.. (everyone hum... "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" :barbershop_quartet_)

This has always been a peeve of mine. IMO way too much value is placed in athletic programs and academic programs are eliminated due to cost cutting. We have developed a sports culture where a select few are pampered and petted and just about get away with murder because they have athletic ability, while really smart kids with academic ability are overlooked. These prima donnas are pushed through schools from grammar school, through college. Given perks, and special privileges and made to feel above the laws and guidelines the rest of us have to live with. Is it a wonder they are torturing animals and beating their wives and kids??
 
He's a paid entertainer, bringing a lot of pleasure to a lot of people.

The labourer is worthy of his hire. We're the ones who made him worth that much, so why now begrudge it to him?

(Incidentally, while I'm one of the growing band of Brits addicted to the NFL, I've never watched a baseball game in my life!)
 
Seriously, here again, I believe that if we were to go back 30 or so years, back before credit cards ruled the universe and most paid with cash or on time with a coupon book, I think stadiums may be emptier than they are now How many middle income and below middle income people with a family could afford to take $200.00 out of their paycheck to take their family of 4 or 5 to a baseball or football game? (Or, a rock concert for that matter.)

These salaries that athletes, movie stars, rock stars and the like are really madness. I thought the recession of 2009 would have made it more real because less people would be attending these events, but I was wrong. Evidently, people would rather charge $200.00 to their Visa card to watch Ryan Howard "maybe" hit a home run, plus add another 18% interest.

People really have their priorities screwed up. If they put all the money the spend on these events into their retirement account, life would be much easier when they retired. I don't call getting ripped off at the ticket office as having fun.
