The chicken in the road/pedestrian crosswalk-no one is stopping. San Francisco

Apparently car drivers in San Francisco are ignoring pedestrians in pedestrian crosswalks is such a problem the police are running a sting putting someone in a chicken costume in a crosswalk. And they get about 30-40 violators each time they do it. Fines can be upto $400.

San Francisco’s police dress up in chicken costumes to catch speeding drivers — here’s the ‘impact’

If they're ignoring super sized chickens hate to see what happens at night with children or seniors in a crosswalk, at night especially.

California law gives all pedestrians, legal or jay walkers, the right of way, but San Francisco has a severe crime problem. Drivers may be anticipating the possibility of a pedestrian yanking open a door and stealing something, like a purse. Happened many years ago to a friend of a friend.

BTW two now deceased family members were San Francisco cops. Far as I know they never got dressed up as chickens.

IMO it’s because we no longer seem to have any consistent enforcement of traffic laws and instead resort to gimmicky stings and joint task forces paid for by state and federal grants.

In my city the approach to policing seems to be to keep a lid on things and react when called but seldom proactive enforcement.

I can’t say that I blame law enforcement, when they do make an effort to enforce the law they are usually pilloried in the news and social media or at risk of losing their jobs.

It seems that today all any of us want is to be protected from the other guy and otherwise left left to do as we please.

Wow, that's quite a choice.

You either risk getting a fine or risk having someone steal something valuable and maybe even put your life in danger. I can see why they might just pay the fine.

I thought of this as soon as I seen the title of this thread. This is from back in the 70s I believe

Chickenman he's everywhere he's everywhere

I was thinking the San Diego Padres chicken. Still in California though.

As a driver usually people in costume are advertising for someone usually holding a sign.

Sadly as noted it also could be a distraction to stop but then anything from a purse snatch to car jacking could occur.

Around here the flashing pedestrian crossings are going up all over. But the people who use them don't look but start crossing immediately after they press the button assuming people will stop or have time to stop.

Even at a red light turning a green a driver should take one last check no one is running a light just like a pedestrian should check is there someone approaching at speed with no chance of stopping regardless of the law.
