The Cost Of Getting Drugs Approved

I recall when the virus vaccine issue came up it was said typically companies go through years of testing before some drugs are approved. Now since the vaccines for the virus were approved so quickly will there be any changes in getting drugs approved? Also, what is the reason such lengthy trials? Is it in part, a fear of lawsuits if the drug causes problems?

The drug companies are in business to make money, not necessarily cure illness. They may hold up issuing a new drug, if an older drug is still making money. And some drugs do require long testing, because of side effects. And most nations require lots of scientific evidence of effectiveness, and manageable side effects. But you do have to wonder why they got this puppy out so fast? Good question.

That illustrates why so many doctors over prescribe. After investing a fortune in research, studies, testing, etc. drug companies have to recoup their investment before they can profit. That's why they offer doctors such huge perks for prescribing. And that's how doctors caused the Opioid crisis.

Pharmaceutical companies were able to rush the vaccine formulation and production by using an FDA law about national medical emergencies, and specifically pandemics. I tried to look up the law for you, but I just got a bunch of links about anti-vaxxers and covid panic. But I did see a link to an article about one of those laws being amended by the FDA this month. Nothing to do with the vaccine, though.

I remember that pain being the 5th vital sign business. The thought was, if someone says they are in pain, they are in pain. Prescribe. I don't think that turned out so well.

There is too much profit in drug companies. I think it's gone way beyond making a decent profit.

As far as the covid vaccine goes, I got my first one in December, right at the beginning.

Our entire Health Care system has Money and Profits as its Primary consideration....patient care is Secondary. These drug companies spend Billions per year on their Ask Your Doctor TV ads, and the disclaimers consume the bulk of the ads. The U.S. and New Zealand are the Only nations which still allow this endless propaganda. If there is ever Any effort to bring health care costs down, banning this advertising would be the best place to start....IMO.
