I first came across "The Highwayman" by Alfred Noyes in High School in Grade 9, which has been read by me many many times, making such a visual impression on me with the story of the titular character and his beloved Bess coming alive, I could almost hear the sound of his horse, clip clop. This poem made such an impact on me that it sparked my own interest in writing poetry and short stories...and the rest is history.

According to one reviewer, " "The Highwayman," is a poem published in 1906 by Alfred Noyes. It is a narrative poem telling a story of a highwayman (from 1700s England), who fell in love with Bess of the long black hair. Bess was the daughter of an Innkeeper. The poem is a story about love, sacrifice, murder, betrayal, and heartbreak."

Have you read such a poem that triggered off a visual spell of sorts...and possibly got your creative juices going?
