The history of telephone switchboard operators

Yes, I recall that it wasn't until the 1950s that one could make a long distance call without an operator connecting it. One could call station-to-station, person to person, or collect.

I remember several times telling the operator what number I wanted, then she'd call back when she had the connection. Long distance calling was more of an event then, because it was expensive.
 
My mother was a telephone operator from 1933 to 1935, in between graduating from high school and getting married. She enjoyed it and made some life long friends.
