The platoon worked all day to get the barracks in shape in anticipation of a 6pm inspection. By 6, it was standing tall or “strack” as we liked to say. But the major didn’t appear. Hurry up and wait, so typical. 7, 8, 9pm still no show. He finally made his appearance at 11.
We stood in line, at attention as he inspected our weapons. He asked me “What’s your third general order, trooper?” At that time I had a humongous volume of gas in the midsection and it chose to make itself known to all. Without missing a beat, the major said, “Your voice is changing but your breath still smells the same.”
