The kid down the street

Love this kid. He asked to borrow my leaf grabbers (big scoops that help you pick up leaves) and a thing called a bag butler that helps hold a plastic leaf bag open so you can fill it. I wasn't using them, so sure. I baked some chocolate chip cookies yesterday, so a put a few in a Ziploc bag and gave them to him. He said he was going to share with his sister. What a sweetie! Gives me hope.

We have several like that around here and it does give us hope.
Isn't it amazing how what we see & hear from media rarely comports with our first hand experiences.

I spent some years on the board of a non-profit that facilitated volunteerism in our county. There are easily 35 non-profits here. This does not include the work that the 90+ churches here do...and it's considerable. All this in a poor rural county of about 30,000 people.

We hosted an annual Volunteerism Recognition Event with awards for various categories. One was the Youth Volunteerism Spirit Award. These were high school aged kids doing all sorts of good. The nominations we would receive were just incredible stories, and the winner was always [rightly] beaming with pride. And this didn't include all the kids who worked with the rescue squad, animal rescue, nursing homes, churches, and a whole bunch of other organizations...and there were a lot of them.

Hope, indeed.

I'd love a kid that did such, too!

Good on you on the side of cookies! 🍪
