"The Legendary Mummers" -- Any Pennsylvanians Care to Teach Us?

They just paraded around the Dixon Oval at the Devon Horse Show. They have really cool costumes and I love their music. I think they used to hold a parade that was shown on TV at Thanksgiving or New Year's?

But who and what are they? Any Pennsylvanians here care to teach the rest of us?

I remember them when I was little. I remember seeing them on TV and was almost afraid of them with their strange head-dresses.

They are out of Philly, have different" divisions," such as comic, strings and fancies. There are a number of clubs that participate in the marching New Years Day parade. The costumes are worked on throughout the year colorful and best known for their plumage.(feathers) They usually will not march in bad weather as it can destroy the feathers. It is a contest of sorts, each club is judged and each division. South Phila is a real happening on this day--the costumes more gorgeous in person and in the bright of light! Throughout the year, some of the clubs make personal appearances, I have seen them outside the city as well. It is a real, Philadelphia tradition. Then they have their "strut" that is often mimicked by those just listening to their music. It is unique--anyone from the area is familiar!
