So far we've been lucky in that there haven't been a lot of storms and the ones we have had have not come ashore. But September is the biggest month for Hurricanes so I'll be hoping our luke doesn't run out. Right now there is an area off the coast of Africa that could turn into trouble.

We just hang out at home, sandbag the garage door and the back door and hope for the best. Thank goodness we're on a bit of a slope and get good drainage of the property.

At the previous home, we'd put up the plywood on the windows when a bad one was coming, but we don't have shutters or plywood for these windows (big ones in the front) so we just hope for the best.

We have massive oaks in the front yard and that makes me nervous every year. In the almost five years we've been living here, no trees have gone down in the neighborhood and everyone has big oaks. Limbs fell, yes, but the trees have held.
 
Hurricanes are always a concern for south Texas. Where I live is far enough inside the state that's it's generally not impacted, except for the potential of flooding rains. The worst hurricane in United States history was the Galveston Hurricane of 1900, which killed up to 12,000 people in Texas.

Then there was Hurricane Katrina, which hit our neighboring state, Louisiana, in 2005, killing over 1800 people, and causing more than 125 billion in damage.
 
We book a hotel room when it is tracking our way. However, we only had to stay once when Hurricane Irma was a threat. Supplies get low at the stores. We did have some damage to our garage last year when a tropical storm came through.
 
This one has me worried. Apparently it's not going to make the big turn to the north and stay out to sea like the ones before it. And the water temperature in the Gulf of Mexico is very warm. It's 85 degrees here in the northern Gulf. :(Untitled design.jpg

As long as it stays out of the Gulf, our home should be OK.
 
Here in Naples Florida, we have a hurricane protection center we can go to. It is supposed to withstand winds up to 175 mph.
I live just feet away from the Gulf. I have watched a few go by. They are scary just to watch them as they move up the coast.
 
We had our share of hurricanes when I was growing up on Long Island. Later I worked on some of them when I was involved in climatology. I guess the worst was a bit before my time in 1938 (I was a year old) when the barrier islands were breached and the ocean visited the small towns.

Hurricane Carol caused havoc on the east coast when I was a senior in high school in 1954.
