The "Cash For Kids" scandal in Wilkes Barre, Pa. rocked the nation. Judges were making money sending kids to detention facilities.

This is just a partial list of indicted in the old "Coal" region of PA. Unfortunately it has a long history of local corruption. How about where you live?









 

Luzerne County And Lackawanna County are both known for corrupt government officials, including judges in Luzerne County especially. Boy, could I tell some stories.

It's all disgusting but the selling of juveniles to over-long sentences to a for profit prison is a new low for me! I can't even describe my fury! Are we back in the Dark Ages? 😱😨🤯

Yes, there has been plenty of bribery-type corruption in my home city. One mayor was sentenced to 37 years-

While investigating municipal corruption,[4][5] the FBI discovered phone records and pictures of Giordano with a prostitute, as well as with her 10-year-old niece and her eight-year-old daughter.[6] He was arrested on July 26, 2001, and, in March 2003, was convicted of 14 counts of using an interstate device,[7] his cellphone, to arrange sexual contact with children.[8] He was also convicted of violating the girls' civil rights. He was sentenced to 37 years in prison.[9]

I remember the bust, I was driving through town after a Dr. appointment and going past City Hall. Police cars, FBI agents, 3 TV News Outlet vans; it took awhile. I had no idea what was going on until I got home and put the news on.

I heard they even rolled up and took the Persian carpet in the mayoral office since the rumor was he was also using and selling cocaine.

Luzerne County's history of corruption has been known for many years. There are even jokes about it.
 
When I moved to Luzerne County from NYC in 1976. my new neighbor threw a party, His $2,000 bribe (That's about $10,000 in todays's money.) had been accepted and he was going to be a new teacher in Sept. Also, I was told that if I had legal problems, to go to this certain bar on a certain night, to see this ceratin judge, and bring lots of cash, and your problem would go away. This I know is true, because I had a problem, and went to that bar on that certain night, and I saw that certain judge; but I didn't bring enough cash. It was cheaper to pay the fine than make it go away. I learned this the first week of living in Luzerne County, but nobody in the capital, Harrisbur, PA could figure that out in over 30 years.
 
Politics at any level is a breeding ground for corruption. Even more sad is many know this going with the intent of making 'a deal' for themselves. Many towns one can't even be hired as a sanitation work without a politicians recommendation.

Government jobs are used to payout/off favors. Many politicians imply/tell people you want a government job they 'volunteer' as a staffer for one wether it's manning the phones, delivering literature or stapling utility poles with campaign posters. In 6 months to year apply for said job and use them as a reference which is code for hire the applicant.
 
The "For Profit" prison which dot the landscape, especially in southern states where they are more popular, are rife with scandal and combine with local governments and courts to assure that their cells are at capacity if possible. And with the removal of donation limits to political campaigns in recent years there is little political will to remove this system.
 
The same thing was going on in South central PA some years ago. PA judicial system has been described as a conveyor belt to prison.
