In 1946 an unnamed Australian woman walked the Bondi Beach Promenade wearing a bikini causing a near riot.
A Lifeguard told her she was "Indecently Attired" and ordered to proceed to the changing sheds and "Put on Decent Clothing"
She was charged with "Offensive Behaviour"
Hollywood Actress, Jean Parker was arrested in 1951 for the same offence.
In 1961, over 50 women were arrested and ordered off Bondi Beach for the same offence.
Men were targeted as well.
"We are taking a good look at the men as well, and many of them have been sent off the beach for wearing exaggerated jockey "
The Waverley Council had had enough.
Council Alderman J. Einfield suggested that women wearing two-piece swimsuits parade before members of Waverley Council and that “Aldermen could then judge if the bikinis were decent”. In reporting the (unsuccessful) proposal The Daily Telegraph quipped, ‘The Eyes Have It’.
By the Summer of 1961 "Indecently Attired" act was abandoned and women won the right to wear Bikinis.
