On a first date, I will try to get my date to talk about herself and her family. A psychologist once told me that people enjoy talking about themselves, so I used that on first dates and it seems to work out well, except eventually, some of them will say "enough about me, what about you and your family?" That's when I get into trouble with the conversation. I don't like talking about my past.

This is not fair! If you want to get someone to talk about themselves but then you refuse to talk about yourself, I think it's a bit unfair. I always believed, "What is good for the goose, is good for the gander." It seems you "want your cake and you want to eat it too" in a manner of speaking.

You don't have to bring out details about your past that you want to hide. Just talk about your travels, places you live, people you know and maybe about your hobbies and interests. If all else fails, there is always the topic of weather and all the bad things the politicians are doing or not doing. Hack, you could even talk about what foods you like or dislike.
