The Town Where Bald Eagles Have Become Pests

Unalaska is filled with Bald Eagles, so many that they have become pests. More here.

The bald eagle may be America’s national bird, but for the small Alaskan town of Unalaska, this majestic bird is little more than a pest. They lurk above telephone poles and stop lights, watching for potential victims to sweep down upon, litter through trash, and steal grocery bags. But mostly they wait for the fishing boats to return with the day’s catch.

Located far out in the Aleutian Islands, this fishing town of 4,700 processes more fish than any other port in the country. And fish is the bald eagle’s staple food. So during the fishing season, hundreds of eagles come to scavenge and nest in the area, creating a nuisance for the local people. The eagles guard their nest fiercely and anybody appearing even remotely as a threat is attacked mercilessly.

This has happened where I live with Canadian geese.

Oh wow!!! I bet not many people have pets there...

In Spain we have to keep an eye on the little dogs when they're out because the Eagles will swoop down and carry them off, and there's nowhere nearly as many in Spain as there is in your story SB...

We seldom see them and when we do it is just a pair with babies. But we also get the Canada Geese....nasty birds, noisy, dirty and they attack if you dare get too close.

The 2nd photo of the single eagle's wing span is an incredible shot. Then that top photo is a little odd. What are the green zippered things (bags?). Are the eagles pecking into the bags and getting seeds or something else brown? And I see a fresh new-looking white duffle bag in the lower left unless I'm not visually interpreting it correctly.
