So - who likes a tipple of the old Scottish Bog Water? Other geographical locations are allowed.

My current selection. I have a liking for nice peaty Islay whiskies - but as you can see I have a wide taste too.

Scotch was almost the only whiskey I would drink, back in the day. Glenlivet, but I liked Johnny Walker Black, too.

A Southern Comfort Old Fashioned was a kick I was on for awhile when we went out.

I went to a Robbie Burns night when I was visiting my son in New England. It was really a lot of fun. I even ate the haggis. It was quite mild.
Anyway, what they had was sampling. Everyone brought a bottle of scotch and you could taste with a small shot glass.
Single malt is supposed to be the best.
Our local outlet has a bottle that sells for $2001.95.
I sent them a picture . My friends wouldn't believe me.
Scotch has a smoky taste.
My preference is Canadian rye whiskey.
Weisers deluxe. Smooth.
Makes a great old fashioned. I like it with Club soda.

I have been a whisky lover for many years. I have attached a photo of my collection as well as a Glenmorangie water pitcher. Some years ago, I took a cruise of the Inner Hebrides and stopped at Bowmore, Talisker, and Isle of Jura distilleries. I also have visited Glenmorangie and Ben Nevis distilleries.
The third photo shows special Norland whisky glasses. These are special double walled glasses to insulate the whisky from a person's handscotch.JPGIMG_7078.jpgIMG_7088.jpg

Dave likes Scotch whiskey. He would approve of your selection. Me? I'll drink it in a pinch, but I'm a bourbon girl. We took the bourbon trail a couple years ago, and learned a lot about the distilling process.

Anyone here try Pappy Van Winkle 23-year old bourbon.? ($3,899 for 750 ml.) From the description below, I can't begin to imagine it's taste.

See a deep amber red. Taste the various hints of caramel, ripe apples, cherries, oak wood and tobacco with a hint of chocolate. This bourbon finishes with a long-lasting and pleasant taste. Starts with a lot of wood flavors but leads to a nice sweet caramel finish.

Talk about a conglomeration of flavors. o_O

This is the Bourbon my husband drinks.

As for myself, I find whiskey and bourbon too strong to enjoy, but do find myself taking a sip of hubbies every now and then.

My late brother, Alan was a bourbon and branch water afficiondo. I made a stab at that but wasn't too happy with it. I've had good Kentucky bourbon in cocktails and can handle that. I will never touch gin or tequila. One try was more than sufficient. Beside the single malt scotch, my dream was always to try Johnny Walker Blue Label. Never could afford it, so I'll just dream these days as now that I can afford it, I don't want it at all. My taste for anything is shot, so why bother?

Bulleit is great, but just a little too "hot" for me, personally, meaning too much rye in the mash bill. Maker's Mark is a very smooth bourbon, because it is just corn and wheat, no rye. At every distillery we visited, they said that the founder usually decided on the mash bill (recipe) by baking bread. We heard so many great stories on that visit to Kentucky! Back in the nineties, the distillery of Heaven Hill and one of its' warehouses caught on fire. Bourbon barrels shot 300 feet into the air! (According to our B&B proprietor.) After the fire, every distillery around offered Heaven Hill the partial use of their equipment and storage. Not one job was lost, and Heaven Hill continued in production. How cool is that?!

There is a simple way to try it. JW makes a sampler of 50 ml bottles of Red, Black, Gold, and Blue. It is not terribly expensive. I tried all 4, and to my taste, and my taste only, I liked the Black the best.
I got my hands of 2 liters of Explorers Club Silk Road, and it is wonderful. I bought them in a Duty Free store when they had a deal for 15% off if you bought 2 :)

Southern Comfort is the most stolen bottles in the liquor store I frequent.

Now the bottles have some kind of gizmo attached so that it has to be taken off at the cashier or it will ring an alarm at the exit.

Is it cheaper or something?

I've enjoyed Scotch since my early 20's when I learned about it in my Wines, Spirits and Fermentation class at San Francisco State. I've never really gotten into single malt Scotches but have enjoyed some of the ones I've tried. My favorite Scotch to date was the Highland Park 25 year old that I tried at the distillery near Kirkwall. I also really enjoyed a 25 year old Tomintoul that I got in a little sampler pack.

During the same trip we visited the Jameson distillery and tried their extremely rare only at the distillery whiskey which was unbelievably smooth. We almost thought about getting a bottle, but the 170 Euro price was a bit steep for us. However it was almost that good. We usually buy Tullamore Dew for use in Irish coffee. It's the brand that used to be packaged for the Buena Vista, the San Francisco bar known best for it's Irish coffee.

However no matter how much I like whisky or whiskey my spirit of choice is Tequila.

Perfection personified!!
