There Was a Time When All Lead Characters on a TV Show had to Be Attractive

Now a days you have characters on shows that literally are slobs and are unattractive (Roseanne, Kevin James etc). There was a time when lead characters had to be attractive. One show We've Got Each Other, ran for 13 episodes on CBS from October 1977 to January 1978. It was cancelled because of low ratings. I remember reading that people didn't like it because the lead characters were ugly or unattractive. I guess the show came on during the wrong time in TV history.

The movie stars and lead characters on tv of my motherā€™s era were largely attractive or at least ā€œruggedly handsomeā€ people if male, which set up an unrealistic standard for most of us. I generally appreciate average-looking people in tv roles as they are more relatable. How one dresses can easily make one appear more or less attractive, and the bar seems to be set pretty low these days for physical attire. My parents used to dress up at least a bit to go out, and today I see pajama bottoms worn in Walmartā€¦ šŸ™€
 
Here in the UK.. it doesn't matter what you look like by and large, if you can act.. then you get the job.. or if you can present you get the job...unless of course the part requires someone who is glamorous

We have all sorts of people acting and presenting, including people with obvious disabilities.. no arms.. no legs.. Deaf...Cerebral Palsy ( the latter is a comedian)

Dresses sloppy. Characters mimic their audiences
By the way. British actors look more real with more ordinary faces and less makeup
Remember UGLY Betty a few years back. Joke was that she isn't ugly. America Ferrara
She is "Hollywood" ugly
