A foster mother accused of murdering a baby boy she was hoping to adopt allegedly described him as a 'proper k**bhead', 'a d**k' and 'a s**t bag' in texts and 'smacked' him repeatedly as her frustration with him turned to violent hostility, a court has heard.

Laura Castle, 38, and her husband Scott Castle, 35, are accused of killing one-year-old Leiland-James Corkill after his mother allegedly inflicted a serious head injury on the child at the family home in Eskdale Avenue, Barrow-in-Furness on January 6 last year.

Jurors at Preston Crown Court were today told the baby - a 'looked-after child' who was taken into care at birth before he was approved to live with the Castles from August 2020 - was rushed to Furness General Hospital and later transferred to Liverpool's Alder Hey Children's Hospital in cardiac arrest and with a bleed on the brain.

Castle had dialled 999 from her home and reported Leiland-James had fallen from a sofa, injured his head and was unresponsive. However, medics at Alder Hey raised concerns the injuries were not consistent with the account given by Castle, as Leiland-James never regained consciousness. Tragically, the infant died of his injuries the next day.

Opening the prosecution case, Michael Brady QC said the couple were arrested and their mobile phones seized and examined. He alleged that text messages revealed that the Castles had referred to him in aggressive and unpleasant terms in the months leading up to Leiland-James's death.

In messages sent to her husband, Laura Castle referred to Leiland-James as 'a proper n*b head', 'a d**k' and 'a s**t bag' and 'an absolute moaning winge bag', while her husband said the baby was 'a fat s**t', 'a k**bhead' and 'a toss bag'.

Mr Brady said: 'They had discussed Laura Castle's use of unlawful physical chastisement... the Crown says that Scott Castle was not only aware of how his wife behaved towards Leiland-James but actively encouraged it.'

Laura Castle denies murder and child cruelty. Scott Castle denies causing or allowing the death of Leiland-James and also child cruelty.

You know what pees me off..is that often these people are in the fostering business for the money only, which is quite substantial, and manage to fool the fostering and adoption services very well into believing they're caring parents who really wish to adopt children, when in fact they have no such plans, they're only in it for the the financial benefits

Hope they ‘enjoy’ their stay in prison.
Well they haven't been convicted yet.. however recent similalr cases have seen the murderers go to prison, then be released under a new name and new home ..at the cost of the British taxpayer, after serving just a few years.. seemingly none the worse for their prison stay... the British justice system is a joke..

Why inflict that on the child?! Why not just give him back?! If they were in it for the money, not going to do them any good now. They say crime makes ya stupid. Guess they didn't realize that medical examiners can tell if a fatal injury is consistent with what "witnesses" report. I hope they spend their lives "under the jail" !!

these types of people are all the same, think they're too clever to get caught, think they can explain away the injuries as being caused by something or someone else..

I wish I could have read this post but I can't. Anything to do with child abuse in any form sickens me, literally. And while I am generally a non-violent person, I would have no problem with public hanging for child abusers.

I understand, we don't execute child abusers any more, result of a Supreme Court decision in 2008 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kennedy_v._Louisiana)

Up until that time Louisiana did. If you read the facts of Kennedy v. Louisiana Mr. Kennedy certainly deserved, in my opinion, the death penalty. Horrendous case, I guess they all are...

😢😭 sad, very very sad

Much like the American justice system.

Unfortunately this happens way too often. We started to watch the Gabriel Fernandez story on Netflix. We had to stop after the details were released in the second episode. The documentary really shined a spotlight on how he was failed by the justice system but the details were so disturbing.

His mother, Pearl Fernandez, is now in prison and has supposedly already been attacked. Prisoners don't have much sympathy for child murderers. Her boyfriend is in prison as well.

He lived with his uncles for a while and was returned to his mother and her boyfriend, who wanted the welfare benefits, accused him of being gay and tortured him until he passed away. Every one of these stories is sad, but this is one of the saddest I've ever seen.

There is nothing that breaks my heart more than seeing innocent children abused, tortured and/or killed by these monsters.

I know that is all too often the case. Unfortunately it can be hard to find good foster families.

People like this should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, they are evil as you say!
And they should be required to share a cell with a very large, strong cellmate who takes a dim view of child abusers and murders. I am a firm believer: let the punishment fit the crime. Nothing teaches a person better then being treated the way they treat others!
