These Norfolk Island Pines Trees were healthy 18 months ago

Athough pine trees normally drop needles, this looks excessive. I wonder if there is a pest infestation or disease that is the root cause. I’m sure they are being observed carefully by arborists. Sad to see.
At the rate of decline I am thinking they will be felled in the not-too-distant future.
Local government-maintained park.

Have you heard any thoughts on what the cause is?
Just now I done a bit of research and it appears that the culprit is the fungal disease Neofusicoccum parvum, colloquially known as the "top-down" disease because it kills the branches at the top of the tree first.
This is occurring all along the Perth coastal suburbs.
As well as the east coast - Sydney/Brisbane and the rest.
Nothing can be done to save the trees.
They will all be removed eventually and new ones planted.

Are they susceptible to bark beetles? That’s what killed my Aleppo Pine. Nutrients could not get to the limbs. It was a beautiful tree, but the annual needle fall clogged the valleys on the tile roof. Not cool.

Ah, yes. That would have been my second guess. Lost a tree to fungus as well.

Bretrick: That is so sad to see. The same thing happened at Bondi Beach. They had beautiful Norfolk Island Palms along the foreshore and in a matter of months they started to die. I read somewhere that a mould had started to grow inside them.
Also, it's not unusual for someone to poison them to make a better view for residents. Maybe that's the case at your place.
