These young ladies are absolutely awed by a landline phone, because "OMG! It did it! It actually did it!"

We both have cellphones, but still have 4 Panasonic handsets that we use.
I finally tossed mine out, along with 2 cordless phones and the charging stands....plus at least 100ft of coaxial cable, probably 200ft of old data wire for PCs and phones, a collection of cable splitters, and a couple of old digital cameras...with the cases!

We still have the phone issued to us at our first address after we got married, back in 1968. It still works too.
I had a rotary phone that I was paying $1/mo. rent for until about 1991. I turned it in, and picked up a push button phone with a clear housing for $18. Like this one:

The kids loved it, I put a long cord on it so they could go down the hall with it and talk in private.

Good Lord, Nathan, I remember we all rushed out to get one of these. Looked like a Fisher-Price toy.

When I was growing up the phone we had was hard wired, you could not unplug it. It did not have a dial, you picked it up and told the operator the number that you wanted. My grandmothers number was "Baldwin 581J".
We still have a land line and it is far easier to use than the smartphone. Smartphone is mostly for weather forecast and messaging the kids who live in the furthest corner of the country.

Before hand held phones, we had the house wired so that there was a phone in 3 rooms. In the movie "Shampoo", Goldie Hawn's character was walking around her house talking on her land line phone that had a really long phone cord. And we thought we were so modern. :)
I remember my grandmother listening in on the conversations of others on her "party line". Each one had their on special ring.
