Things not to say

Don't ask me and honest question if ya don't want an honest answer. If someone has hurt feelings.......... they will get over it......or not. Life goes on.
In all fairness, @PurplePower's original post brought up not the topic of asking a question but of insensitive things people say—unsolicited—when someone is struggling.

'Be grateful you don't have something worse' can possibly come across as if to say the sufferer doesn't think that way on their own the first place. It may be meant as 'encouraging, but can be demeaning, even hurtful. (Hard for me to explain my opinion on this.....)

I don't do that either anymore, or honor the flag, but I don't mess with law enforcement.
We stand as patriots to show respect for the Nation. We also stand in appreciation for the thousands of soldiers that died so that all of us can be thankful for the freedoms they have provided and protected for us. The brave stand up. The weak, well, we all know what they do.

I am not good at verbal commination either. I grew up in an environment where interpersonal skills were none existence and my immediate families were usually blunt and rude to each other when they speak. So here I am, having trouble connecting with people all my life, and say wrong things all the time. Now at this old age, I gave up and let it go. I usually stay quiet when I am not sure what to say or not sure if my response would be appropriate.

You're doing fine. I appreciate your posts.

My son, the one I keep talking about, acts very crazy in airports, to the point where once he got so insane when they wouldn't let him take cooked food on the plane, they would not. let us. on the plane. at all. And they even put handcuffs on him! But TG the next day they let us fly home.

I myself, however, do not always stand for the anthem.
Did they give a reason for not letting you on the plane with cooked food? Was it something with a strong odor?

I always stand for the playing of the NA when in public. I see it as a Patriot and an obligation

Maybe 15 years ago, a co-worker lost his 16 year old son in a car accident.

After struggling to figure out what to write in a sympathy card to him and his wife, I finally gave up and wrote 'I know there is nothing I can say that will make what you're going through any easier, so just get through your day however you can. I'm here if you need anything'.

He told me a few years later that his wife carried that card in her purse for at least a year.

Sometimes, not having the right words can be a blessing.
