There are 2 terms which define a flag's presentation: The Pike and the Fly.

The Pike is the flag's vertical dimension when flying, and the Fly is the horizontal dimension.

The flag should be briskly run up to the top of the staff before being lowered slowly (reverently) to the half-staff position.
When lowering a flag from half mast; raise it to full mast, salute if military, and then lower it all the way down.
